vexercises | Recent Entries

Hi again all, and welcome new members especially! At both con.txt and vidukon,

bonibaru and I ran panels on the Vexercises, and there were lost of new interested folks (and some vexercise veterans too :) People expressed interest in a Vexercise Summer School Edition, for those who either have just found the comm and want to give the vexercises a try, or for some folks who started in the Spring but couldn't keep up because of schedules and such. (Or for anyone who just wants to go in for another round!) We also brainstormed some really fun sounding new exercises that could be options as well.

So, what do you think? Is this something you'd be interested in? What time frame would work for you? I was thinking maybe starting July 15th, but we're open to suggestions.

Hi folks! As the dust clears from a busy con season (Vidukon and Con.Txt!) we've realized we never posted the link to the Vidukon vexercise vid show. It was *super* hard to pick just 45 minutes of vexercises (because the creativity coming out of this comm is awesome and immense!) We tried to pick examples that would give a good sense of each vexercise, while also spanning all different types of sources (haha we could've easily done one that was all The Untamed :D or at least all c-drama). So the 8th Vexercise for the 2.0 round is the same as for the O.G. round: a free vid, no rules! Even the 1 minute restriction is gone! (Unless you really wanna hold onto it...or you could go even shorter, and make a instagram or tiktok vid :D)

The only guidelines here are: do your best to draw on the tools we've been playing with throughout the vexercises, some or all of them, it's up to you.

Vexercise 8: Free Vid!

Deploy any and all of these techniques to make the fan video edit of your heart, including but not limited to your chosen source, length entirely up to you! Try to deploy some combination of the various techniques you explored in the exercises along the way.

Hi folks, so the "offiicial" time for the multvids challenge is up (though if you're still working on yours, that's okay... I'm just getting my source organized myself!) But for those of you that were timely, how'd it go? Was it fun, frustrating, rewarding, all three? Are you happy with your results? Would you make more multivids in the future? Would you recommend the multivid experience to friends? :D

Hi everyone!

Wow, here it is in June and we're on to the 7th vexercise, Advanced Round: Multivids!

And we're on to Vexercise 7!!! After this one, there's only one more, the free vid, when you get to vid (to) your hearts desire!

For this vexercise, the guidelines are as follows:

7) Advanced round // multivid:

In a one minute video, put your media source choice in conversation with other media using match on action, graphic matching, audio layering, and lyrical play.

If this is your second time doing this challenge, then the 2.0 version is: same prompt, but try using more sources than you did the first time for your multivid!

Also, I always want to shout out one of my favorite multivids of all time, the classic vid, Data's Dream. Please rec your favorite multivids in the comments!

Hi folks! So we've reached the end of our Vex 6 "extension" and are ready to move on to Vex 7 (well, theoretically :D Some of us are still *cough* lost in the endless universe that is typography). For those of you who have completed your genre-shifting or alternative narrative construction videos, how'd it go? How do you feel about the outcome? Any advice for others coming after who are going to give this vexercise a try, in either variation?

Hi vexercisers! So boni and I were thinking, with vidukon coming up and all (not to mention deadlines for con.txt) we know folks have been busy with other things, and if you're like me, you're just a *wee* bit behind where you wanted to be with your vexercise (*cough* I'm still working on my typography vid *cough*). So we thought we'd postpone the due date for this week's vexercise till next weekend, and then also drop vexercise 7 next Sunday, when vidukon-goers may likely be feeling very inspired and itching to get to their editing software. So, no vexercise due today/this weekend! Of course if you're ready to turn yours in, that's awesome -- please do share and inspire other people in their alternative universe and genre/mashing experimentation!
Otherwise, feel free to share here: how's it going? is there anything that's getting you stuck? what concepts are people working with? Looking forward to seeing these vexercises come in!

(So I just am a day late on everything this week... whoops sorry about that)

We're on to Vexercise 6:

The OG Version:

Genre-Mashing/Alternative Universe: Produce a 1 minute video edit that combines your selected source with another source from a different genre (i.e. fantasy, western, sitcom, film noir), and/or use editing to transform the genre of your source text. Audio can be of your choosing.

And the Vexercise 2.0 version:

Alternative Narrative: 1 minute vid where you create an alternative/constructed narrative. (I know this is a possibility with the OG version, but it’s hard, and no one really went for it last time--we all leaned much more to the genre mixing side of things!)

Both versions of this vexercise is inspired by the many amazing genre shifting AU/constructed narrative vids coming out of Chinese vidding these days, but there are many histories to these types of genre mash ups. Share your favorites (or share thoughts/ask questions) in the comments!

Hi everyone! How did your vexercise 5s go? Or are you still working on it? Or like me did you um, open the timeline today lol :D

I know this isn't everyone's preferred aesthetic (I'm wondering if that's more about sort of genres/traditions of vidding, or generational aesthetics, or some combination of both... /meta) but for those of you that did give it a try, did you feel a bit different about it coming out the other end? Or pretty much like, this was cool to try, never again? :D

The hardest bit is bringing in the different song at the end, but that's my favorite, because I feel like there are surprises there, or it just really breaks with the way we think of using text, if we think of using text at all... any discoveries on that end? I feel like most of the time it's a real reach, but every once in a while it really, really works..

Hi folks--Sorry for the last-moment-of-the-weekend check in.... (that 2nd dose of vaccine was a doozy and I was a little out of it this weekend!) BUT how are the lyrical play vexercises going? This is a funny one, because a) using text is not a thing that some folks do much at all in certain vidding corners and b) the second version, where the text doesn't go with lyrics, can feel especially out-of-the-norm from a vidding perspective. But it can also produce some really cool results!! Can't wait to see what folks come up with this round :)

Hello Vexercisers! Hope you're having a good time working on your projects, or, if you're like me, thinking about working on your project, then accidentally re-watching your source all day until it's too late to work on your project 😬 (grimace.emoji) but that's OK!

VidUKon convention is coming up soon (details at

vidukon_cardiff). This year

lola and

bonibaru are running both a Vexercises Panel to talk about this project, and a Vexercises Vid Show to exhibit some of the different creations this talented group have made in the past two years.

Before finalizing the vidshow playlist, we need to confirm whether everyone is OK with having any of your vexercises shown at the convention (creators will be credited in the show program). If you do not wish to have your vexercise(s) played in the vidshow for VidUKon, please let lola or bonibaru know as soon as possible. The deadline for the final playlist is May 23 - please let us know no later than May 21 if you would like to opt-out (this will give us time to rearrange or substitute as needed).

Unfortunately we can't show all the works, as much as we would love to - there are ~150 works in the AO3 collection so far, representing 50+ different fandoms! Narrowing down to a vidshow time limit of 45 minutes has been a challenge - so many good works! So much creativity! We're working on having a good mix between the different exercises as well as spreading the works out between fandoms as much as possible. But we want to make sure to respect individual's wishes, so if you would prefer not to have your vids used, we're happy to oblige.

Hi folks! We're on to Vexercise 5! You can of course do the OG version, as follows:

Produce a 1 minute video edit from your selected source, in which lyrical interpretation ( guides your shot choice. You could interpret the lyrics literally or metaphorically/suggestively. Once you have completed this video, choose selected lyrics to incorporate creatively as text within the video. Then make a version of this video with the text, but substituting the original audio with a different piece of music that has no lyrics.

OR you can do a version with keyframes for moving text and text masking:

Follow the guidelines for the OG version, but try using key frames for moving text or text masking. (Links for tutorials and examples coming soon)

Here are a couple of short tutorials for Premiere that I've found helpful. If you know of others, for Premiere or for other editing tools, please share in the comments and I'll add them to this post.

Whoops, I didn't manage to post this yesterday, but the Vexercise 4 deadline was officially last night, though as always late vids are always welcome. How'd this go for folks? For me, I felt like once I dug in, I wanted to spend *all* the time with my character--and also I had trouble choosing between a bunch of wonderful side characters! How about for you?

Hi all! How goes it with the side character vids? Have you chosen to put the spotlight on a more obscure character, or that secondary character who just doesn't quite get the love and attention they deserve? Have you discovered new things about them in the process?
Also, this vexercise doesn't have the same type of formal restrictions as the other vexercises we've had so far... is that freeing? challenging? both?
I... haven't gotten started on this yet. Oops. I can't seem to decide on a side character, though I have several in the running. We'll see who wins out! I'm determined to have something by Sunday :D
