Hi everyone who is vexercising for distraction! The Vexercise 2s are now officially "due"! If you've got something to post, make sure you put it in the Vexercise 2 post, and also remember to add it to the AO3 collection if you like. We'll post a Vexercise 2 round up soon!

How did your ventures into match on action and graphic matching go? How do you feel about your finished project? Did you get new insights into your source text, maybe, or gain some technical know how? Get stuck on anything? Hopefully in any case it was a fun creative exploration!

Stay tuned shortly for the drop of Vexercise 3!

Please let us know in the comments of any other vids you would suggest as examples of motion/graphic matching!Hi all! Firstly, thank you for all your amazing Pechakuchas for Vexercise 1! Lola and I have been so thrilled with the engagement and creativity we’ve been seeing, not to mention the wide range of fandoms represented! So great 😀

And of course there is no “final” due date so if you feel like you are as bitten by the Pechakuchas bug as we are, please feel free to keep posting more! And don’t forget to add them to the Vexercises collection on AO3 (if you are posting there, that is).

Now on to Vexercise 2!

Your task for this one is to produce a one minute video edit (with an audio track of your own choosing) on your selected source using match-on-action and/or graphic matches as your primary editing logics. The motion of each shot should seem to continue into motion in the following shot and/or connect through images that are similar to the eye.

Here's a really helpful video on different types of match cuts (with lots of helpful Sherlock examples!) This video is about match cuts in cinema and TV, but it's really cool how we can adapt these techniques to vidding/fan video editing.

And here are some vids that use visual continuity, match on action, and graphic matching (feel free to rec others in the comments!)

General note: most of these vids contain a bunch of visual triggers (immersive motion/kinetic editing as well as light flashes) and timestamping every potential trigger in the below is a massive job so please bear in mind if you are sensitive to these types of visual triggers.

Nothing Is Safe (thuviaptarth, Watchmen) (please heed content notes)

Motionography 2012 (23Lubriderm, Remix Culture)

Multifandom Mashup 2019 (for All the Graphic Matches including My Country: The New Age! \o/)

Starships (bironic, multifandom)

Juice (sisabet, Disney villainesses)

Move Your Body (ohvienna, Xena)

if there’s hope, then let’s move (cescedes, 陈情令 | The Untamed)

Please let us know in the comments of any other vids you would suggest as examples of motion/graphic matching!

Hi everyone! Sorry I didn't have a chance to post this weekend but the Vexercise 2s are now officially "due"! How'd it go? Which version did you try? Are you happy with what you produced? Any new insights about visual continuity, lightbuilding, or transitions? For those of you who did the new transitions vexercise, what did you think of it? Did you find any new favorite transitions?
Stay tuned shortly for the drop of Vexercise 3!

How goes it with your Vexercise 2s? Which version of the challenge have you decided to tackle? Any insights? Stumbling blocks? Questions come up? Looking forward to seeing these as they come in!

Hi folks! It's time for Summer School Vexercise 2!

Here's the instructions:

Vexercise 2 Focus on Transitions: (1 minute video) Use transitions for every edit. Extreme version: use as many different transitions as you can.

You can also absolutely opt to do the earlier versions of Vexercise 2, Visual Continuity &or Lightbuilding

For the transitions version of this vexercise, you can use the default transitions that come with your editing software, but you can also look further afield for some more possibilities.  Here's a video that links to some promising resources for transitions!

I
f you're new to editing, here are a couple of basic tutorials on using transitions
Using Transitions in Premiere
Using Transitions in Resolve

On a meta note, I feel like the use of transitions in fan video/vidding differs pretty radically depending on which corner of fan video (vidding/edits/etc.) you're in (and also for that matter the time period!) In the vidding tradition, shall we say (Vividcon tradition, maybe?) clean cuts are definitely a key aesthetic for a tight, clean, feel, but even within that editing style, transitions can be used so effectively. But in other corners of fan video, transitions are a highly visible part of the video itself, rather than careful accents.

What are some of your favorite videos that use transitions, either subtly or as a sort of spectacle? Let's link them below and come up with a little playlist of sorts!

Today is the due date for vexercise 2, all things visual continuity, be it match on action and graphic matching or lightbuilding. So if you want to get something in under the wire, today's the day! (Or, you know, any day after this, but today's the *official* deadline, you know how it goes.)
If you're all done, how'd it go? And are you excited for Vexercise 3 (which drops tomorrow?)
We'll make a post of all the vexercise 2s. Oh, and if you post to a03, don't forget to add them to the vexercises collection there!

Hello all! Happy Saturday! How are your Vexercise 2s going? Are folks trying for match on action? Light building? Both?
I was messing around with something and then it got out of control and became a vid not a vexercise, so back to square one for me :D
If you've started already, are there things you're finding challenging? Satisfying? Both at once?
If you're stuck and not quite sure how to start, maybe share your thinking, your idea, your approach, and we can all help brainstorm!

Hi everyone!! We are on to Vexercise 2! So for this round, there are two options:

Vex 2: The OG Version:

Visual Continuity: Produce a 1 minute video edit on your selected source using match-on-action and graphic matches as your primary editing logics. The motion of each shot should seem to continue into motion in the following shot. Audio should be music of your own choosing.

Here's a really helpful video on different types of match cuts (bonus with lots of helpful Sherlock examples!) This video is about match cuts in cinema and TV, but I think it's really cool how we can adapt these techniques to vidding/fan video editing.

Some vids that use visual continuity, match on action, and graphic matching (feel free to rec others in the comments!)

Yuris in Love(starting at about 1.41)
Motionography 2012
Multifandom Mashup 2019 (for All the Graphic Matches)

Vex 2: Follow the light. (aka Lightbuilding)

Lim talks about this in Demystifying Vidding. Produce a 1 minute vid where your guiding logic is lightbuilding. Try letting the flow and build of light guide your editing choices throughout. (You can still incorporate match-on-action as well, so this sort of builds on the OG version)

Wunderland (Ghibli, by Traf)
Flow (Elementary, (Bones), House, The Mentalist, Person of Interest, Sherlock, The X-Files 1, by Lim)

【水龙吟】Epic Fighting Scene Mix Cut of Word of Honor (Word of Honor, by AvenueX)

Please suggest more examples for either version, or ask any questions in the comment, and have fun! It's been amazing seeing all the Vex 1s come in, can't wait to see what folks create for this one!

Hi everyone! Just a reminder that the second set of Vexercises are due today! If you haven't already, do post yours to the A03 collection! And hopefully a few more will come in today :) (and after, that's okay too, unless you need to hear that it is Most Absolutely Due Today, in which case it is!)

Like last time, after today we'll make a post that compiles all of the vids created out of the second exercise so you can catch any that you missed, and hopefully offer motivational comments if you have the energy :)

How did this exercise go for you? Was it harder or easier than the last one? Did it make you think about your visual source in a new way?

Tomorrow of course Vexercise 3 drops!

Happy vidding :) <3

Hello Vexercisers! Somehow, it's the weekend already! How is Vexercise 2 treating you? Are you finding it easier or harder than Vexercise 1? What types of issues are cropping up?

People seemed to like when I shared the origins for Vexercise 1, so I'll try to keep that going. In this case, this Vexercise was in part inspired by this post by Lim in the Videlicet Vidding Zine. I feel like motion and graphic matching are such a wonderful tools in vidding, but maybe ones we don't talk about explicitly all that often, at least as often as we do scene choice, lyrical interpretation, etc.

Does approaching this Vexercise looking for opportunities for graphic and motion matching make you see the source in a different way? Does it maybe give new insights about repeating imagery or camera movements in your source? I find that's totally happening to me!
