Hi vexercise folks!! Vexercise 3s -- Rhythmic Editing -- are now "due"! If you've got something to post, make sure you put it in the Vexercise 3 post, and also remember to add it to the AO3 collection if you like. We'll post a Vexercise 3 round up soon!

How'd this rhythmic editing vexercise go? For those of you who decided to do multiple versions with different styles of rhythmic editing, which ones were most fun? Did you find yourself discovering new styles, or doubling down on your preferences?

More generally, I'm curious: how are you feeling about working with the same source/source limits? This is around the time when I get itchy to work with something new :D But I admire the consistent ppl who stick with the same source all the way through...

Hello all! Happy Saturday/Sunday depending on where you are! How are you going with your rhythmic editing vexercise?

If you've started already (or finished), are there things you're finding challenging? Satisfying? Both at once?

I really enjoyed this one and especially enjoyed the bonus version using vocals and instrumentation as the basis for my edit but the syncopation was fun too! Anyone else who has finished have any insights they'd like to share re their process? Things that were challenging/satisfying?

If you're stuck and not quite sure how to start we'd love to help. If you feel up to sharing your ideas/approach maybe we can all help brainstorm! Equally if you really don't know where to start let us know and maybe we can figure it out together!

Hi all! It's time for Vexercise 3! This vexercise focuses on rhythmic editing -- making those vids that make you want to move with them. Just a note, because this comes up sometimes -- rhythmic editing can be faced paced, sure, but you can also do slow and intense/intentional rhythmic editing. It's up to you and the audio you choose!

Here are the details for this vexercise:

3) Rhythmic Editing

Produce a one minute video edit where you focus especially on rhythmic editing. Try your hand at time remapping at least once in this video. Choose an audio track that has a clear rhythmic pattern or interesting rhythmic progressions to make your editing experience easier. Reference the wave visualization of your audio track to help guide your editing choices. (If you’re up to it, make 2 versions, one that cuts primarily on the beat, another where you try syncopated editing (cutting on the *and*) and for extra special credit, an extra one that cuts on other instrumentation/vocals

Some examples & explanations/tutorials

Example of emphasis on on-the-beat editing
Example of emphasis on syncopated editing (warning for flashing lights)
A short video on syncopated rhythm (warning for flashing lights)

A short video on time remapping in Premiere
Lim on time remapping (or velocity vidding) in Premiere.
Short video on time remapping in Davinci Resolve
More advanced version for greater flexibility in Resolve

Extra: Examples of instrumentation editing

Iscariot (My Country: The New Age)
Overcome (Star Wars: Rogue One)

Have other videos to recommend for examples of rhythmic editing? Mention them in the comments and we'll add them to the post!

Hi all! Happy fall! Can we still call these the summer school vexercises? Sorry to be less punctual than usual with this due dates and prompts... it's been a bit of a crazy time on my end. But vexercise 3 is "due", and I'll drop vexercise 4 in a soon-coming post.

I hope that you're enjoying your vexercise experimentations! How'd your vexercise 3 experience go?  Which version of the prompt did you decide to do and why? Advice for others doing a variation of vex 3?

Hi all! It's (past) time for Vexercise 3 to get its roll out. So here we go!

The new summer school version of Vex 3 is:

Vexercise 3 Focus on Color/Color Grading: (1 minute video) Let color guide the logic and flow of this vexercise, either by selection or special effects. Highly recommended: download an LUT or more and try using it!

There are soooo many LUT resources out there. Here are a few links you could try:

Comment below with your favorite vids that use color creatively, or any additional resources you know about coloring, or any questions you have!

And as always, you can also do the older versions of Vex 3, Audio Layering Supercut or Rhythmic Editing.

The OG Vexercise 3:

Audio layering supercut Produce a 1 minute video edit of your selected source, in which you edit together similar visuals (this could be a theme like “hands” or “curtains,” or it could be a type of shot or camera work like “all the close ups”). Your audio for this should be a selection of spoken word from your source, or audio that is not music from your source. You can combine these spoken word or non-music sounds with music if you want! The audio and visuals can line up some of the time or none of the time. If your source doesn’t have audio, you can choose audio from another source.
Vex 2.0 Vexercise 3:

Rhythmic Editing Produce a 1 minute video edit where you focus especially on rhythmic editing. Try your hand at time remapping at least once in this video. Choose an audio track that has a clear rhythmic pattern or interesting rhythmic progressions to make your editing experience easier. Reference the wave visualization of your audio track to help guide your editing choices. (If you’re up to it, make 2 versions, 1 that cuts primarily on the beat, another where you try syncopated editing (cutting on the *and*)
Happy vexercising! Can't wait to see what everyone makes!

Hi folks! So today is the due-ish date for Vexercise 3. How'd it go? How did it feel to stretch those rhythmic editing and/or audio editing muscles? I had a lot of fun playing with rhythmic editing this time round, I might've gotten a bit carried away :D

Also I just want to say how amazing it's been to see *all* the videos coming in for all the different vexercises so far. It's so inspiring! Thank you all for making this comm so awesome! <3

Hi folks! How is Vexercise 3 treating you? Are you trying the rhythmic editing, the sound editing, or both? Run into any questions/issues/confusions/fun discoveries? Found any inspirational videos or tutorials to share?

Also, there've been a couple questions about process, specifically about whether people are making subclips, using pancake timelines, or just scrubbing through episodes. What have you been doing so far with the vexercises in terms of clip prep? What's been working for you? (or not working for you? :D)

Hi folks! It's time to kick off Vexercise 3! The two versions of the vexercise this time are fairly different, although you certainly could combine the two and do rhythmic editing with audio play. (The Hannibal Glitter & Gold linked below is a great example of that).

Questions? Additional examples & inspiration? Drop a comment below, and of course when you have a vexercise to share, share them here. Happy vidding!

Hi everyone!

Apologies also from your co-mod, who has been deluged with IRL work and is falling into bed every night without the joy of vidding :( BUT I would like to thank everyone that worked on Exercise 3! Your efforts have kept me going, shored me up, helped me find 60 second intervals of happiness in a rough couple of weeks!

I'll also be updating new works to the master posts for Exercises 1 and 2 - I've seen your submissions, I've just been too wiped to get to them. Today is the day! If I miss ANYTHING please feel free to PM me here or on Twitter or wherever - my overwhelmed brain will truly appreciate the heads-up.

Without further ado, here are the group's accomplishments this round! How about some applause, kudos, etc for everyone's truly amazing work. Every week you guys show me something new, and I've been doing this for nearly 20 years. Yet even I am still learning. Thanks for being such great teachers!

Hello everyone!

First off, sorry I missed the check in post last weekend... some stuff was keeping me away from the computer but I've been delighted to come back and see the audio editing supercuts that have come in! We've got a bit fewer (so far) than the previous exercises... I'm wondering if you found this exercise harder than the others, and why? I did, actually! I was thinking it's because it deviates more fully from what we maybe traditionally think of as a "vid"... but I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!

This vexercises is there because, well, really this is a huge genre of fan video, in some fandoms at least, and I thought it would be fun to explore and stretch a bit. But I've found it hard, and am now more than before in awe of some of the amazing audio editing fan videos out there.

Anyhow, enough rambling... If you haven't already, do post yours to the A03 collection! And hopefully some will keep spilling in (like mine :D)

As is our custom, after today we'll make a post that compiles all of the vids created out of the third exercise so you can catch any that you missed, and hopefully offer motivational comments if you have the energy :)

Tomorrow of course Vexercise 4 drops!

Happy vidding :) <3

Happy Sunday Everyone! It's time for Vexercise 3:

3) Audio layering supercut

The instructions read as follows: {edited for music version!}

Produce a 1 minute video edit of your selected source, in which you edit together similar visuals (this could be a theme like “hands” or “curtains,” or it could be a type of shot or camera work like “all the close ups”). Your audio for this should be a selection of spoken word from your source, or audio that is not music from your source. You can combine these spoken word or non-music sounds with music if you want! The audio and visuals can line up some of the time or none of the time. If your source doesn’t have audio, you can choose audio from another source.

My guess is that this one might be an unfamiliar process to some--that is, maybe those of us who have vidded before still may not have a lot of experience with this one. That's true for me--I haven't done a lot of audio editing beyond cutting songs down to size. But this practice of audio editing fan video is very popular within certain fandoms and fan communities and is spreading rapidly, and can be so amazingly done. Plus there are those videos that integrate audio *into* a song like all the Glitter and Golds. Strictly speaking that doesn't fit into this challenge, BUT if someone wants to go for it I know I for one would be excited to see it!

Audio Editing Inspirations (please feel free to suggest others)

A (very small) smattering of Supercut Inspirations:
Videographic Essays:Vids
  • hmmmm there was one of Sherlock's coat that I loved, but I can't seem to find it... if you can think of any vids that incorporate or use supercut logics, please share then and I'll add them here!
  • Ummm how about this Guardian one: warning for lollipop indecency :D Guardian - WeiLan】Lollipop Temptation

Sooo, you may have questions, ask them here!!! And if and when you create something for this challenge, of course do share it here and with the A03 Vexercises collection!!

As always, we'll have a check in next week, and this exercise will be due the following week, on April 25th.

Happy vidding :)

ETA: I've been pondering this (and contemplating my own vexercise!) and I think that, since music is so important to vids, and so many of the examples we gave actually do incorporate music, it makes sense for the rules for this one to expand to incorporate external music, as long as you *also* edit audio source. :)
