Hi all! It's time to talk about technology! We always like to crowdsource our knowledge and use this as a place we can figure things out together.

For those of you have already decided on your editing software, what are you planning to use? If you’ve edited before, anyone planning on switching editing softwares and trying something new?

And for those of you just starting out, what hardware are you planning on using (Mac, PC, chromebook, ipad)? Have you tried any editing software before?

Here are some resources we shared last year.... let's update this list as we go! (We've also added a few specific tutorials for some of the vexercises...)

Some lists of software options:

  • Free
  • Full list with prices listed
  • Davinci Resolve Lola has used this and loved it. It's free, and just as powerful as Premiere, but felt more intuitive. I’ve (Yvette) started playing around with it myself and I am considering switching - I’ve been having a ton of issues with Premiere Pro and DVR feels really streamlined and I agree with Lola - it’s much more intuitive. I also really like the colour coding on the tracks on the timeline and a bunch of other things (oh and the fact it’s free, haha)
  • Wondershare Filmora A somewhat affordable and intuitive first step video editing software.

Some decent tutorials on YouTube:

Additional Resources

There are some great affordable tools for screengrabbing and downloading (like, from YouTube).

  • 4K downloader (stellar tool) for getting HQ files and mp3’s from YouTube, though I'd recommending getting premium to get the 1080p HD files...
  • Movavi is great for screencapturing things, well, playing on your screen

We can add to this list as we find more and get a sense of what software folks are using!

Hello summer school vexercisers!! How’s it going with the first vexercise? Did you decide to try the haikus, pechakuchas, both? If you did the haikus, how do you feel about the short length and the particular 5/7/5 second structure? If you’re doing the pechakuchas, how did you feel about the two different versions? Which version did you like best of the two you made, and why? And if you’ve done both haikus and pechakuchas, how do they compare?

I’ll admit, I’m kind of dying to hear about the haikus especially, and the difference in experience between haikus and pechakuchas, since we’re the first group taking them from theory to practice pretty much, and I do feel like they have a pretty different flow (both creating them and then the final product) than the pechakuchas.

Also, let’s have a convo about tech! What editing programs are you using? What computers/devices are you using, for that matter? Does anyone have questions about how to get source etc., or how to do certain steps of the process?

Hope you’re having fun vidding/vexercising!

FWIW, last year for the vexercises I (Lola) used
Davinci Resolve and actually really loved it. It's free, and just as powerful as Premiere, but felt more intuitive to me.

I've also heard good things about
Wondershare Filmora as a somewhat affordable and intuitive first step video editing software.

A few decent tutorials on YouTube:

So I've been trying to learn Davinci Resolve for my vexercises, because it looks *really* cool and has some things I miss from FCP and some other things that just seem really good for vidding specifically. And this morning I found a really excellent and not super long tutorial that I feel gives everything you need to know just to start basic vidding on Resolve.

It's this!

I will also add this tutorial to the tech page, but I thought I'd make a post here so people can see.

I really am liking resolve! I've just made two really simple pikachus, and it's taking a while to get used to certain quirks, but overall it feels like a really good vidding tool

 So let's talk tech!

For those of you already set on your editing software, what are you planning on using?

For those of you just starting out, what hardware (Mac, PC, chromebook, ipad?) are you planning on using? Have you tried any editing software before?

Here are a couple of lists of current software options that seem pretty comprehensive to me...

Free

Out of these, I (Lola) have used Premiere (what I use now), Final Cut Pro (which I love), and imovie, which is not non-linear and I found very frustrating for vid-making.

I also use the iPad app Lumafusion, which is pretty amazing for an ipad app.

I have heard really good things about Davinci Resolve -- it's free and apparently as powerful or more than Premiere. I'm thinking of downloading it today and trying to make a set of pechakuchas on it, so if anyone wants to join me on that adventure, please do!

I've also heard good things about Wondershare Filmora as a somewhat affordable and intuitive first step video editing software.

A few tutorials on YouTube I dug up that seem good:

Excellent Davinci Resolve Tutorial
Another Davinci Resolve Tutorial

A whole tutorial playlist on Filmora

LumaFusion Tutorial for Beginners

Also, there are some great affordable tools for screengrabbing and downloading (like, from YouTube).

4K downloader is stellar for getting HQ files from YouTube (I'm trying to think, I may have had to go premium to get the 1080p...
and Movavi is great for screencapturing things, well, playing on your screen

We can add to this list as I find more and get a sense of what software folks are using!
