Heya Vexercisers! This is just a quick reminder that Vexercise 5 - colour/colour correction/light-building technically wraps up tomorrow (insofar as any Vexercise is ever "done" - please feel free to post any time!) If you've got something to post, make sure you put it in the comments of the kickoff post, and also remember to add it to the AO3 collection if you want to!

On Monday I will make a round-up post which collects all the posted Vexercise 5s as of then and I'll also launch Vexercise 6 (given a lot of folks are at fanworkscon I'm holding off till Monday for both of these)

Happy Saturday/Sunday everyone! How are you going with your colour/colour grading/lightbuilding vexercise?

If you've started already (or finished), are there things you're finding challenging? Satisfying? Both at once?

I ended up getting carried away with mine and accidentally ended up with a whole vid which I'm about to post.

It seems lightbuilding is a confusing concept for a bunch of folks and I would say it's really up for interpretation. In my mind it's using the lighting (natural or artificial) like you would use movement or graphic matching - letting the flow of it guide your editing choices. If anyone has more questions please ask! And/or if you're stuck with colour, let us know and we can chat about it :)

Hey everyone, as I mentioned in my last post it's time to drop Vexercise 5!

This exercise is focused on colour/colour grading (or color if you are, unlike me, from the US!)

So the brief here is to make a one minute video where you let color guide the logic and flow, either by selection or special effects.

Highly recommended: download a LUT and try using it!

There are many many LUT resources out there. Here are a few links you could try:

The 70 Best Free LUTs Hand-picked By A Colorist For Your Films
73 free LUTs for Premiere Pro
Free LUTs for Da Vinci
30 FREE Cinematic Luts | Color Grading | How to apply Luts in Adobe Premiere Pro
How to Install LUTS in Davinci Resolve
How To Install LUTs in Premiere Pro 2020 on MacOS super EASY!
How to Properly Install Luts in Premiere Pro for Windows & Mac Users

I haven't listed any vid examples here because there are numerous examples of vids that use colour in either of these ways (on the colour grading side there are too many YT vids to count that meet this brief!) But do please make suggestions in the comments!!!

Advanced: Lightbuilding

Lim talks about this in Demystifying Vidding. Produce a one minute vid where your guiding logic is lightbuilding. Try letting the flow and build of light guide your editing choices throughout.

Example vid: Lim's Expo (MCU)

Also some of these examples from Vexercises 2.0 may be useful!

Any questions, please ask!

Hi everyone! So it's time for Vexercise 5, and I have to admit to being really geekily excited for this version. I'm not sure how much energy folks have been having lately for the vexercises (I know I've been totally swamped and have been trouble opening Premiere!) but I hope that this one might get people inspired (and it may get me finally editing again too!)

So, the new version of Vexercise 5 is:

Vexercise 5 Aspect Ratio & Framing: (Up to 1 minute video) Create a new vid or rework a vexercise for instagram or tiktok. Not that you need to post it there, but create it with the appropriate aspect ratio for the platform you choose, and then consider the best framing of each image for that aspect ratio. For TikTok also keep in mind the looping nature of the format. These videos can be shorter than a minute if it feels right to you, since edits on Instagram and TikTok often are quite short.

Before I wrote this one up, I tested it out myself to see what was involved. And I found it was really a different way of thinking. I tried to rework bits of previous videos for TikTok and I found that I had to really go back to the drawing board to make it work with the vertical aspect ratio. It's amazing how it narrows your focus and limits what footage you can use. If you want to check out my experiments, here they are: tiktok experiment 1 and tiktok experiment 2.

Here's a quick overview of settings (on Premiere) for TikTok
And here's a video tutorial for Instagram

Have you explored the world of short form fan edits on Instagram, TikTok, or even YouTube? There are SOOO many videos, and they can look really different from "traditional vids" (whatever that means :D) and can be really aesthetically inspiring. Please do share your favorites or any questions you have in the comments!

And of course, if you'd rather do one of the earlier version(s) of Vexercise 5, you totally can. The focus is on Lyrical Play/Lyrics and Typography. The prompt is as follows:

Vex 5: Lyrical Play with Key Frames & Masking

Follow the guidelines for the OG version, but try using key frames for moving text or text masking. (Links for tutorials and examples coming soon)

OG Version: Produce a 1 minute video edit from your selected source, in which lyrical interpretation ( guides your shot choice. You could interpret the lyrics literally or metaphorically/suggestively. Once you have completed this video, choose selected lyrics to incorporate creatively as text within the video. Then make a version of this video with the text, but substituting the original audio with a different piece of music that has no lyrics.

Inspirations for typography
Whichever you do, have fun with it and don't worry about perfection -- these are just (v)exercises after all, and meant for experimentation and pushing out of comfort zones!

Hi everyone! How did your vexercise 5s go? Or are you still working on it? Or like me did you um, open the timeline today lol :D

I know this isn't everyone's preferred aesthetic (I'm wondering if that's more about sort of genres/traditions of vidding, or generational aesthetics, or some combination of both... /meta) but for those of you that did give it a try, did you feel a bit different about it coming out the other end? Or pretty much like, this was cool to try, never again? :D

The hardest bit is bringing in the different song at the end, but that's my favorite, because I feel like there are surprises there, or it just really breaks with the way we think of using text, if we think of using text at all... any discoveries on that end? I feel like most of the time it's a real reach, but every once in a while it really, really works..

Hi folks--Sorry for the last-moment-of-the-weekend check in.... (that 2nd dose of vaccine was a doozy and I was a little out of it this weekend!) BUT how are the lyrical play vexercises going? This is a funny one, because a) using text is not a thing that some folks do much at all in certain vidding corners and b) the second version, where the text doesn't go with lyrics, can feel especially out-of-the-norm from a vidding perspective. But it can also produce some really cool results!! Can't wait to see what folks come up with this round :)

Hi folks! We're on to Vexercise 5!  You can of course do the OG version, as follows:

Produce a 1 minute video edit from your selected source, in which lyrical interpretation ( guides your shot choice. You could interpret the lyrics literally or metaphorically/suggestively. Once you have completed this video, choose selected lyrics to incorporate creatively as text within the video. Then make a version of this video with the text, but substituting the original audio with a different piece of music that has no lyrics.

OR you can do a version with keyframes for moving text and text masking:

Follow the guidelines for the OG version, but try using key frames for moving text or text masking. (Links for tutorials and examples coming soon)

Here are a couple of short tutorials for Premiere that I've found helpful. If you know of others, for Premiere or for other editing tools, please share in the comments and I'll add them to this post.

Hi all!! Today is the Very Official (cough cough) due date for vexercise 5. How did your typographic and lyrical explorations go? Or are you still working on it? There are still a few hours left (or as many as you want), so maybe you're still at it (I am! Hoping to have it done before close of day today :)

As always, there will be a round up post of everyone's submissions, and Vexercise 6 drops tomorrow! Oh and don't forget to add your videos to the Vexercise collection on AO3!

Hi everyone!! How are your vidding and text explorations going? This exercise definitely stretches some potentially unfamiliar design muscles and involves learning some new skills.

I started working with text in vidding this year, inspired by some beautiful vids and AMVs I'd been seeing lately, though its always something I've found really interesting and wanted to try. Actually, I really started playing with text and typography with the videographic essay exercises, and once I saw the possibilities of that, I started thinking more fully about how text can be and is being used effectively for vids.

It seems like quite a few of you have already dove (dived? Hmm) into these exercises. What have you found the challenges to be? What feels like it works? From my limited so far experience working with text, I've found that keeping the editing simple and limiting the text per shot makes a difference, or it becomes overwhelming. But maybe that's not always the case. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this!

OH and this exercise is due this Saturday, May23.

Hi everyone! It's that time of the weekend, time for the new vexercise. This one is inspired by the many amazing vids out there that play with text and lyrics in different ways. It's a multi step vexercise--can't wait to see what folks come up with!

Lyrical play/no lyrics (3 versions):

Produce a 1 minute video edit from your selected source, in which lyrical interpretation ( guides your shot choice. You could interpret the lyrics literally or metaphorically/suggestively. Once you have completed this video, choose selected lyrics to incorporate creatively as text within the video. Then make a version of this video with the text, but substituting the original audio with a different piece of music that has no lyrics.
