Hi all! So I'm afraid I dropped the ball on the vfxercises... not sure if anyone was keeping track, but yeah, we're a bit behind :) It may be that the vexercises themselves are enough, but if anyone would like to do vfxercise 5, here's the belated drop post!

Vfxercise 5: (10-30s) use/modify a preset edit layout/template

I ended up springing for a month of motionarray to download a bunch of templates for kinetic typography, LUTs, etc., but I
know there are free resources out there as well. Please rec any that you have!

Let's say that this one is "due"... September 3rd, if anyone wants to give it a go!

Hi all! Vfxercise 4 is pretty simple, incorporate masking in some way for a 20-30 second edit. You could do this on whatever tool you want to use, be it Premiere, Resolve, After Effects, FCP, you name it. Mask away characters, mask away objects, go crazy! Can't wait to see what things you erase and create!

Hi all! Anyone working on their vfxercise 3? If so, how's it going?

How are you approaching your text animation? Are you using lyrIcs, or dialogue, or something else?

I decided to learn Davinci Resolve (and fusion) this summer, and so am using vfxercise 3 to kick that off... I keep falling asleep to tutorials on fusion nodes! I can't decide if this is because it's complicated, boring, or relaxing :D

Hi all! For our 3rd Vfxercise, let's play around with animated text. Make a 20-30 second edit, incorporating animated text in some way, with whatever vfx tool you choose. Looking forward to seeing what ppl create!

a couple of examples, feel free to suggest others in the comments!

We had a handful of folks experiment with the VfXercises, some on Davinci Resolve, some on After Effects, and some on Premiere. I loved seeing what's come out of this challenge so far! Here they are:

Hi all! For those of you who want to try your had at learning special effects/vfx, you can join in with the VfXercises (in addition to or in place of the regular vexercises, whatever you want!)

We're on to VfXercise 2:

20-30 second edit, with transitions between shots (bonus if you use 3D transitions). You could put transitions between all of the shots, or just some of them.

Transitions are huge on tiktok and instagram edits, and there are a million tutorials for AE transitions (or video star); I played around with them, but also wanted to tone them down a bit for a more vidding-like aesthetic

I made two videos as examples/learning the ropes myself!

I used this tutorial for the glitch transition video - he goes super fast but I paused a lot :D

And I used this tutorial (though just the radial wipe) for the stage mix

Hi again all! So here’s the extra bonus challenge for this round, VfXercise 1.

We’ll keep these pretty simple and relatively open, so people can do them on different software platforms/with different tools. The challenge for this round is as follows:

VfXercise 1: 30 second edit comprised of 10 x 3-second shots, with at least one effect (like an LUT) applied throughout (on AE, through an adjustment layer)

Lola and I both tried this one out in advance, and it was fun! (Though we did discover that AE can be even more obsessive than Premiere, a dangerous realization :)

Here’s my example.

And here’s Lola's

Stay tuned for a separate post about VfX tech, tutorials, etc. which we can build as a resource list as we go. I’m imagining these VfXercises will be a lot about experimentation and exploration, and we can share what we discover with each one.

[*blame the name on [personal profile] nu_breed it was her idea.... :D]

So... I’ve also been trying to learn a new tool for me - Adobe After Effects - and as part of the process, I thought that we could have a sort of second set of bonus vexercises each round, except these would be VfXercises—challenges meant to specifically dig into special effects tools, and designed to be short form videos (even shorter than a minute!).

These are not tried and tested, it would be a grand experiment! And perhaps people could adjust them to whatever tool they’re using. I’m using After Effects, but also interested in trying the ipad app Video Star. It’s also possible they could be done within Davinci Resolve Fusion (I have to admit I found fusion a bit overwhelming, and haven’t tackled it yet…) They could even be done with Premiere, for the most part.

This is what we’re thinking these extra VfXercises would be, loosely. (Perhaps we can tweak some of the later ones as we go)

  1. 30 s edit, 10 3-second shots, with at least one effect (like an LUT) applied throughout (on AE, through an adjustment layer)
  2. same (though if you would like to let go of the 3-second shot restriction, go for it) but with transitions between edits (bonus if you use 3D transitions?)
  3. (10-30s) incorporate animated text
  4. (10-30s) incorporate masking
  5. (10-30s) use/modify a preset edit layout/template
  6. make animated closing logo or a watermark, or both!
  7. free edit

Thoughts? Suggestions? Questions?

(We also have been gathering/testing out tutorials etc., so we'll share those as well!)
