[personal profile] lola posting in [community profile] vexercises
Hi folks--Sorry for the last-moment-of-the-weekend check in.... (that 2nd dose of vaccine was a doozy and I was a little out of it this weekend!) BUT how are the lyrical play vexercises going? This is a funny one, because a) using text is not a thing that some folks do much at all in certain vidding corners and b) the second version, where the text doesn't go with lyrics, can feel especially out-of-the-norm from a vidding perspective. But it can also produce some really cool results!! Can't wait to see what folks come up with this round :)

Yay for the 2nd shot, and hope you feel better soon!

I've chosen my first song and the lyrics I want to highlight, and a tentative second instrumental piece. Working on picking out clips now. I've never done the lyrics on-screen before, so a little anxious about the technical aspect of making it come out the way I'm envisioning. Fingers crossed!

It's been interesting! I don't... like the lyrics-on-screen trend very much, just aesthetically, in the normal run of things? But also I totally phoned in this assignment last year, and out of sheer embarrassment over that, I've ended up putting more concentrated effort into this assignment than any of the previous ones this year. It's still not something I really see myself doing a lot of in future, but it's an interesting challenge.

This challenge looks terrifying, tbh. But probably a good learning tool.

I’m still working on the side character vid, LOL. No skipping, the challenge excites me! When it’s only 1 min. 😁 we’ll see...

I am not a fan of text on screen in general, so I passed on this exercise last year, mostly because learning how to do something I won't be likely to do in the future because I don't prefer the aesthetic doesn't appeal to me. But maybe it's worth the time? Has anyone found the learning curve to be very steep? Is there some sort of plug-in that makes adding text easier?

I just added multiple text layers and fucked around with placement and used key frames for opacity - but I did it manually mostly - it took me quite a while to figure out what looked best, just a lot of trial and error.

I'm actually done with mine but I need to make some tweaks and I've been hit with another cold so I need to wait to post until I'm feeling better.

The learning curve was...IDK, how steep is "figuring out how to use masks", because that's what I did this year. Last year I learned about keyframes! So I'd say it's worth figuring out the techniques, because you can apply them to lots of stuff that isn't text on screen. The linked video for putting text behind moving objects was super helpful.

I'm going at the first vid and trying to find some instrumental music that might fit, I've dabbled in text before, but tbh it is usually something I do if I feel the movement is lacking, otherwise sometimes it seems to distract from the clip I so lovingly cut lol, digging in to focus on text will be different for sure ^^'

I decided to give this a go three days ago, and have managed to complete the vid in all versions! \o/ I kind of prefer the no-lyrics version myself, but I wanted to practice keyframe/masking and so did a full lyrics vid as well. Guardian: Remembering How To Love on AO3.

I actually used keyframes for the vid I did last year - I didn't realize there was any other way to work with text! But I definitely didn't do any masking then, so it was super useful to learn how to do that now.

Thank you! It took me a couple of days of watching tutorials and fiddling about without any idea of what I was doing, and then literally all of yesterday to get it looking nice. I still feel very wobbly about the aesthetic part of it - like, I don't have a sense for what works and what doesn't? But I so enjoyed learning new stuff and applying it! The vexercises are really awesome for that.
