[personal profile] nu_breed posting in [community profile] vexercises
Hi all!!! Here we go, the first vexercise of summer 2022! Welcome to Vexercisers old & new!

For this first vexercise, we decided to keep it simple and stay with the original version of the vexercise. We've found that this vidding pechakucha variation remains a terrific exercise for people new to vidding to learn the ropes of editing, and for more experienced editors to try out new media sources, new ideas, or to embrace the limitations and to see what you can do within them.

So many amazing and inspiring videos have come out of Pechakuchas. We have a playlist of them here that [personal profile] bonibaru put together, plus others that were not posted to YouTube at the
Vexercise collection on A03

Here are the instructions/guidelines for this first vexercise:

**1) Pechakucha 2 ways**

Create a video edit of exactly 60 seconds consisting of precisely 10 video clips from your chosen source text, each lasting precisely 6 seconds, assembled with straight cuts. Make two versions of your pechakucha, with 1 minute excerpts from two different songs as audio. Fade in and out on your audio at the beginning and end of the audio clip.

[Word to the wise: Most six second clips that you use are bound to have in-clip cuts--you don't have to go looking only for clips that have no internal cuts. But you can make those internal cuts work for you rhythmically or thematically etc!]

This exercise is inspired directly by the first of the videographic criticism exercises, but modified here to be vid/fanedit focused with the inclusion of music from an outside source. You can see some examples of the original videographic pechakucha’s here and a more vidlike one Lola made here!

Stay tuned for a post about the bonus VfXercise (special effects oriented challenge) for this round and a breakdown of each vexercise and the "due" dates should you wish to get a head start!

If you have any questions about this vexercise, either before you start or as you get going, feel free to post them here!

This vexercise will be "due" in two weeks, so June 11.

Also, please feel free to post your work to the Vexercise AO3 collection!

Got really into this and am proud to see my growth from the last time I did a pechakucha, have robots and existential angst with Nier Automata!

Ah thank you so much! I found myself preferring the second one as well, it seems with these exercises I favor the surprising syncs I find with a different set of audio lol

Ahhh these are so good! It's hard to believe they're the same edit, the feel is so different and the timing works so well for both of them. Also, beautiful match on action/graphic matching!!

Thank you! I really let action/graph matches guide my editing to try and have a more cohesive edit and it ended up leading to some interesting storytelling options

Ooh, I like these! I agree with the other commenters that the second hits better for me, the music bringing a bit of sharpness to the various movements and such. Both are really good fits for robots and the footage mood, though – I liked the slightly "flat" affect and emotional detachment. It's also hard to believe they're actually pechakuchas, since the timings work so perfectly!

I have to admit, for the second set of audio, since there was no clean one minute section that wouldn't have an awkward fade out, I decided to experiment with where to start the audio, that freedom game me the ability to find a lot of cool little moments that might have been necessary sacrifices in the orignal vid. Thanks for the kind words!

These are both so good! I think I actually like the first one more, because I like the building up feeling, but the second one matches the timing so well.

Thanks! Yeah, musically I'm much more a fan of the first song, trying to make sure I hit that beat drop was really fun

Thank you! If you're curious, it is the game, Nier Automata, a future apocalypse where androids fit a proxy war against aliens for the remaining humans left behind.

Oh very nice movement in this! My favorite is the second, with the harder beats.

Oh wow, these are gorgeous. I love the way the two music selections feel so different and yet both inspire similar pathos.

Thank you! I had this realization that while I was editing the first one to a love song, I just kept showing scenes of the characters killing each other over and over again. So for the second I basically made the subtext, text
