[personal profile] nu_breed posting in [community profile] vexercises
Hi all!!! Here we go, the first vexercise of summer 2022! Welcome to Vexercisers old & new!

For this first vexercise, we decided to keep it simple and stay with the original version of the vexercise. We've found that this vidding pechakucha variation remains a terrific exercise for people new to vidding to learn the ropes of editing, and for more experienced editors to try out new media sources, new ideas, or to embrace the limitations and to see what you can do within them.

So many amazing and inspiring videos have come out of Pechakuchas. We have a playlist of them here that [personal profile] bonibaru put together, plus others that were not posted to YouTube at the
Vexercise collection on A03

Here are the instructions/guidelines for this first vexercise:

**1) Pechakucha 2 ways**

Create a video edit of exactly 60 seconds consisting of precisely 10 video clips from your chosen source text, each lasting precisely 6 seconds, assembled with straight cuts. Make two versions of your pechakucha, with 1 minute excerpts from two different songs as audio. Fade in and out on your audio at the beginning and end of the audio clip.

[Word to the wise: Most six second clips that you use are bound to have in-clip cuts--you don't have to go looking only for clips that have no internal cuts. But you can make those internal cuts work for you rhythmically or thematically etc!]

This exercise is inspired directly by the first of the videographic criticism exercises, but modified here to be vid/fanedit focused with the inclusion of music from an outside source. You can see some examples of the original videographic pechakucha’s here and a more vidlike one Lola made here!

Stay tuned for a post about the bonus VfXercise (special effects oriented challenge) for this round and a breakdown of each vexercise and the "due" dates should you wish to get a head start!

If you have any questions about this vexercise, either before you start or as you get going, feel free to post them here!

This vexercise will be "due" in two weeks, so June 11.

Also, please feel free to post your work to the Vexercise AO3 collection!

"from your chosen source text" - does this mean the same episode of something, or the same show? The same film, or same series of films? If I'm using a music video, does it mean only the music video, or the mv and its trailers, or that "era" of a group?

The official rule is "Choose your primary source. It can be anything! From a TV series to a web series to music videos or vlogs to behind the scene footage to a movie. But it should be between One and a half and 2 hours long, so two episodes of a TV series or a single film, etc. In general, we recommend that you use only this source for all the exercises, but if a particular activity sparks a creative idea and you want to expand or swap your source, of course you can!"

That said, you can choose to break any Vexercise rule you want.

Haha, I love this. Very different feeling with each. I love that you used the musical too.

Okay, thanks!! That's really hepful. I might bend the rules a bit and assemble 1.5 hours of music videos (since I have a bunch I've been wanting to play with together, and have been thinking of them as a loose "corpus" in my mind) but then stick to those for all the exercises then. Sorry for the very newbie question!

Yes, this is kind of what I'm doing! I feel like the answer to this question of source text limits really depends on what source you're using. If you're using a film, vs. a tv series, vs. MVs, how you approach your source corpus could be very different!

This was an interesting exercise!

My source text was Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, so there is a minor content warning for a shot of Order 66

Ah thank you so much! I found myself preferring the second one as well, it seems with these exercises I favor the surprising syncs I find with a different set of audio lol

Ahhh these are so good! It's hard to believe they're the same edit, the feel is so different and the timing works so well for both of them. Also, beautiful match on action/graphic matching!!

Oh wow I loved these soo much!! You created such *moods* with both, with the image visual combos; I love how you're bringing together footage from different groups to create such a full sense of aesthetic and theme. (this is also a concept close to my heart as I recently made a Oneus lore vampire vid :D And also I love Enhypen, so yes, you had me from the get go!)

omg these are all so good I can't choose!! I adored the first one (what a cover!), but the other two were pitch perfect too, how are these so good?

Ooh, I like these! I agree with the other commenters that the second hits better for me, the music bringing a bit of sharpness to the various movements and such. Both are really good fits for robots and the footage mood, though – I liked the slightly "flat" affect and emotional detachment. It's also hard to believe they're actually pechakuchas, since the timings work so perfectly!

These are both so good! I think I actually like the first one more, because I like the building up feeling, but the second one matches the timing so well.
