Happy Sunday Everyone! It's time for Vexercise 3:

3) Audio layering supercut

The instructions read as follows: {edited for music version!}

Produce a 1 minute video edit of your selected source, in which you edit together similar visuals (this could be a theme like “hands” or “curtains,” or it could be a type of shot or camera work like “all the close ups”). Your audio for this should be a selection of spoken word from your source, or audio that is not music from your source. You can combine these spoken word or non-music sounds with music if you want! The audio and visuals can line up some of the time or none of the time. If your source doesn’t have audio, you can choose audio from another source.

My guess is that this one might be an unfamiliar process to some--that is, maybe those of us who have vidded before still may not have a lot of experience with this one. That's true for me--I haven't done a lot of audio editing beyond cutting songs down to size. But this practice of audio editing fan video is very popular within certain fandoms and fan communities and is spreading rapidly, and can be so amazingly done. Plus there are those videos that integrate audio *into* a song like all the Glitter and Golds. Strictly speaking that doesn't fit into this challenge, BUT if someone wants to go for it I know I for one would be excited to see it!

Audio Editing Inspirations (please feel free to suggest others)

A (very small) smattering of Supercut Inspirations:
Videographic Essays:Vids
  • hmmmm there was one of Sherlock's coat that I loved, but I can't seem to find it... if you can think of any vids that incorporate or use supercut logics, please share then and I'll add them here!
  • Ummm how about this Guardian one: warning for lollipop indecency :D Guardian - WeiLan】Lollipop Temptation

Sooo, you may have questions, ask them here!!! And if and when you create something for this challenge, of course do share it here and with the A03 Vexercises collection!!

As always, we'll have a check in next week, and this exercise will be due the following week, on April 25th.

Happy vidding :)

ETA: I've been pondering this (and contemplating my own vexercise!) and I think that, since music is so important to vids, and so many of the examples we gave actually do incorporate music, it makes sense for the rules for this one to expand to incorporate external music, as long as you *also* edit audio source. :)

I... sort of forgot the supercut thing, oops, and turned it into more of a micro-cut? One scene cut and recut all over again. I'm proud of my audio work, though! Continued vidding Guardian, Ye Zun-y things. Whispers, Voices, Pictures, Lies. (AO3)

I love this so much; it's so atmospheric. The coloring works very nicely to add to that, too.

Thank you! The coloring took ... two passes, actually, to do with both coloring and also transitions as I wanted them, though I'm not sure whether that was program limitation or operator error.

Good for you getting it to work, even with two passes. I've had to do that before. Post-processing phase is the most finicky.

I have literally zero knowledge of canon, but this is so hypnotic! I love it.

Just popping in to say this is one of my favorite multi-fandom examples of audio editing AND it combines the other techniques we've already discussed!

I genuinely have no idea whether this got anywhere near either the object of the exercise or what I was trying to do in the first place, but here it is:

Dead Channel (I'm going to err on the side of putting a flickering image warning on this one.)

I like that this is like a tone poem where the subject is ghosts. The layering of the sound and images is haunting.

Anyone for a supercut of Bai Yu and Zhu Yilong singing out their love? I did kind of fail on the "not music", but they're so cute singing together I couldn't resist! Love Broadcast on AO3.

Working on it was pure delight. Just look at these two and how they keep smiling at each other and touching each other and - ahhhh~! ♥ So glad it made you happy!

More success with limiting source and I went the 'integrated with music' route with this one. "Click Boom Boom" on Youtube and AO3, no warnings.

This was interesting, because I tried to adhere to the supercut rules, but limitation of source left me needing to pull out repeating visuals, so this may come off as incoherent. Hm. Still really fun to do!

Okay, so having not-so-accidentally done a vid with music, I wanted to try one without.

Here's Love on Ice, for Yuri on Ice. Please note that you can turn on YouTube's captions if you want subs!

It was a really different kind of experience doing the audio editing first, and then trying to find ways to vid it... I wish there was a way of separating the background foley from the music, but alas.

Here's my Wen Qing supercut! (I made it sad again.)

Last Night I Heard Everything In Slow Motion

It was really fun to clip for this one because I knew exactly what shots I needed! I didn't use all the clips, but I did keep them in the order they appeared on the show, which was deeply satisfying to me.

I added a combination of people talking and non-musical ambient sounds from the show-- I'm not sure how much the smaller sounds really add, but I liked playing with them!

I really struggled with wrangling the onscreen text-- HOW DO PEOPLE DO THIS ALL THE TIME. I HATE IT. WHAT ARE FONTS, WHY IS TIMING, AHHH.

here i am with my attempt at this challenge!

https://youtu.be/HHubCmSp2FI

i used the theme of them turning around/looking up/... and added audio of the character's names being called
The biggest challenge was finding audio clips that were relatively "clean" without any annoying flute music blasting in the back adskghsdfg (nothing against flute music but this genuinely drove me insane)

As an aside, everyone is so pretty. I like your theme of saying names and I can't help but think about that thing where a person's name sounds different in the mouths of different people.

I'm not fully satisfied with this but I think a lot of that is just because of how far this is from how I usually approach vids. I think it does work!

Heartened to see everybody else posting at the last minute too! I made things harder for myself on this on by A) changing sources (I know, I know, but I got so excited about The Favourite!) and B) getting highly distracted from the original prompt. I started out intending to make a supercut of all long shots, which this movie is full of, but I got bored and kept changing it up:

half the links in this post don't seem to be working? like, I can right-click the MCU link and open it in a new tab no problem, but when I try to do that with the Good Omens link, I do not have that option, and choosing to copy the link gets me "http:// https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cr0AvAdn9MM&list=PLGDrwAYvGR97G83CekFyJxYVr6AxJuXI8&index=4" instead.
