Vex 8 Free Vid Check In!

Hi everyone! Somehow, we're a week in to the final Free Vid challenge. (How is it September, really?/?)  How's it going? Does it feel strange to be loosened from all constraints? Exciting? Overwhelming? Can you see the impact of the vexercises passed in your work now?

Feel free to share any questions, discoveries, challenges, or even partial drafts here if it would be helpful! Looking forward to see what vids come out of this one.

Vexercise 6 check in!

Happy Sunday/Monday everyone! How are we all going with our side character/vid response vexercise?

If you've started already (or finished), are there things you're finding challenging? Satisfying? Both at once?

I'm currently re-clipping my source due to a technical issue ughhhh excruciating honestly but that's a different topic altogether - I do have a response vid I am itching to start on, though!

If anyone has any questions/concerns please do comment and maybe we can chat it out :)

Vexercise 4 Check-in!

Hello all! Happy Saturday/Sunday! How are you going with your lyrical play vexercise?

If you've started already (or finished), are there things you're finding challenging? Satisfying? Both at once?

I have barely started mine as I'm sick with a cold and trying to get my vids ready to submit to Fanworks Con before the deadline on Monday, but after that I'm keen to get back to it!

Let us know if you're stuck and not quite sure how to start and if you feel up to sharing your ideas/approach maybe we can all help brainstorm! Equally if you really don't know where to start let us know and maybe we can figure it out together!

Vexercise 1 Check-in!

Hi all! One week in--how are your pechakuchas going?

There have been so many posted already, so awesome!!! Lola and I are both super thrilled that you are all so engaged and inspired :D

For those of you that have already posted, what was the experience like? How did you go through the process of narrowing down your visual source, choosing your clips, choosing your music? Were there any tech issues or other challenges you ran into?

For those of you who haven't yet started where are you at with it? Do you have some things you're still trying to decide on--like your focus, your source, etc? Let us know, maybe we can help you figure it out!

Checking in: Haikus, Pechakuchas, Tech?

Hello summer school vexercisers!! How’s it going with the first vexercise? Did you decide to try the haikus, pechakuchas, both? If you did the haikus, how do you feel about the short length and the particular 5/7/5 second structure? If you’re doing the pechakuchas, how did you feel about the two different versions? Which version did you like best of the two you made, and why? And if you’ve done both haikus and pechakuchas, how do they compare?

I’ll admit, I’m kind of dying to hear about the haikus especially, and the difference in experience between haikus and pechakuchas, since we’re the first group taking them from theory to practice pretty much, and I do feel like they have a pretty different flow (both creating them and then the final product) than the pechakuchas.

Also, let’s have a convo about tech! What editing programs are you using? What computers/devices are you using, for that matter? Does anyone have questions about how to get source etc., or how to do certain steps of the process?

Hope you’re having fun vidding/vexercising!

Final vid check in & Vexercise Summer School

Hi everyone! How's it going? Are folks working on a final free vid? If so, how does it feel to be freed of the 1 minute restriction? And well, all the other restrictions? Is it freeing? Overwhelming? Awesome? Awesomely terrifying?

I realized we never really clarified a "due" date for the final free vid, since the timing got delayed at the end because of the cons etc. Let's say July 17th?

And then we can kick off the new Summer edition on July 18th! There seems like there's plenty of interest in the summer edition, so it's a go :) Stay tuned for more details on the Summer Special Exercises!

Lyrical Play Check In

Hi folks--Sorry for the last-moment-of-the-weekend check in.... (that 2nd dose of vaccine was a doozy and I was a little out of it this weekend!) BUT how are the lyrical play vexercises going? This is a funny one, because a) using text is not a thing that some folks do much at all in certain vidding corners and b) the second version, where the text doesn't go with lyrics, can feel especially out-of-the-norm from a vidding perspective. But it can also produce some really cool results!! Can't wait to see what folks come up with this round :)

Side Character Vid Check In

Hi all! How goes it with the side character vids? Have you chosen to put the spotlight on a more obscure character, or that secondary character who just doesn't quite get the love and attention they deserve? Have you discovered new things about them in the process?
Also, this vexercise doesn't have the same type of formal restrictions as the other vexercises we've had so far... is that freeing? challenging? both?
I... haven't gotten started on this yet. Oops. I can't seem to decide on a side character, though I have several in the running. We'll see who wins out! I'm determined to have something by Sunday :D

Vexercise 3 Check In

Hi folks! How is Vexercise 3 treating you? Are you trying the rhythmic editing, the sound editing, or both? Run into any questions/issues/confusions/fun discoveries? Found any inspirational videos or tutorials to share?

Also, there've been a couple questions about process, specifically about whether people are making subclips, using pancake timelines, or just scrubbing through episodes. What have you been doing so far with the vexercises in terms of clip prep? What's been working for you? (or not working for you? :D)

Vexercise 2 Check In (2021)

Hello all! Happy Saturday! How are your Vexercise 2s going? Are folks trying for match on action? Light building? Both?
I was messing around with something and then it got out of control and became a vid not a vexercise, so back to square one for me :D
If you've started already, are there things you're finding challenging? Satisfying? Both at once?
If you're stuck and not quite sure how to start, maybe share your thinking, your idea, your approach, and we can all help brainstorm!

Vexercise 1 Check In (2021 edition!)

Hi all! Here we are, it's been one week in--how are your pechakuchas going?

So many have been posted already, I'm kind of amazed!! For those of you that have already dived (dove?) in, what was the experience like? How did you go through the process of narrowing down your visual source, choosing your clips, choosing your music? Any tech issues or other challenges you ran into?

For those of you who haven't yet started (um, this includes me) where are you at with it? Do you have some things you're still trying to decide on--like focus, etc? I'm working with a new source and haven't yet decided on which eps I'm going to use, I might just mess around and see what feels interesting!

Final Vexercise Progress?

Hello! We are mere days away (like, two!) from the final Vexercise "Due" date!

I'm sorry I didn't check in earlier this week/last weekend! But, how's it going?? Is this final Vexercise a doable thing? I'm super excited about mine except for the issue of TIME there is not ENOUGH! (Aaand I might've chosen a six minute song to vid to, but I swear, I'm gonna cut it down, really :)

Anyway, commiserate, complain, celebrate, have at it! Can't wait to see all these videos together.  I'm  so impressed with us!

Multivid check in!

Hello all! Resurfacing from the two days of vid immersion that was vidukon to see how everyone is doing with their multivid adventures? If you're anything like me, you started with dreams of using five or more sources, and then before too long made peace with a concept that only uses two...

Or maybe you're using dozens!

If you've dug in beyond choosing your sources, what challenges have you faced so far? Tech issues like aspect ratio? Conceptual issues?

How are you approaching connecting your sources? And have there been unexpected pleasures along the way?

Looking forward to seeing the multivids come in over the next week plus!

Vexercise 5 Check In

Hi everyone!! How are your vidding and text explorations going? This exercise definitely stretches some potentially unfamiliar design muscles and involves learning some new skills.

I started working with text in vidding this year, inspired by some beautiful vids and AMVs I'd been seeing lately, though its always something I've found really interesting and wanted to try. Actually, I really started playing with text and typography with the videographic essay exercises, and once I saw the possibilities of that, I started thinking more fully about how text can be and is being used effectively for vids.

It seems like quite a few of you have already dove (dived? Hmm) into these exercises. What have you found the challenges to be? What feels like it works? From my limited so far experience working with text, I've found that keeping the editing simple and limiting the text per shot makes a difference, or it becomes overwhelming. But maybe that's not always the case. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this!

OH and this exercise is due this Saturday, May23.

Vexercise 2 Check In & Origins

Hello Vexercisers! Somehow, it's the weekend already! How is Vexercise 2 treating you? Are you finding it easier or harder than Vexercise 1? What types of issues are cropping up?

People seemed to like when I shared the origins for Vexercise 1, so I'll try to keep that going. In this case, this Vexercise was in part inspired by this post by Lim in the Videlicet Vidding Zine. I feel like motion and graphic matching are such a wonderful tools in vidding, but maybe ones we don't talk about explicitly all that often, at least as often as we do scene choice, lyrical interpretation, etc.

Does approaching this Vexercise looking for opportunities for graphic and motion matching make you see the source in a different way? Does it maybe give new insights about repeating imagery or camera movements in your source? I find that's totally happening to me!
