Hi everyone who is vexercising for distraction! The Vexercise 2s are now officially "due"! If you've got something to post, make sure you put it in the Vexercise 2 post, and also remember to add it to the AO3 collection if you like. We'll post a Vexercise 2 round up soon!

How did your ventures into match on action and graphic matching go? How do you feel about your finished project? Did you get new insights into your source text, maybe, or gain some technical know how? Get stuck on anything? Hopefully in any case it was a fun creative exploration!

Stay tuned shortly for the drop of Vexercise 3!

I learned a lot! I’m also realizing that I kind of love 1 min as a bound length (I know that isn’t the purpose of these exercises).

I like the way you phrased it there; that really captures the feeling I think. Long enough to do some things and tell a story, but still decidely short.

Would it be fair to think of a 1 minute vid as similar to a drabble (100 words) in conception/creation?

Oh yeah, same! I'm laughing at myself a bit, because I'm kind of sitting here going "wait... 1 minute can be... a vid?" For several unconnected reasons.

  • I always thought vidding was Too Much Work, because songs are long and 2-3 minutes of footage takes forever to put together (as I learned from previous video editing experience). But I can do 1 minute!
  • Sometimes I watch a vid and I start zoning out, because attention span, what is that? And now I'm like, shorter vids! Genius!
  • Wait. You can use only a part of a song? *surprised Pikachu face*
  • I get vidding ideas that are like "okay, but this song and this character", which doesn't feel enough for a full song vid. 1 minute vid, though. That'd work!

Anyway, 1 minute vids <3

(Well, I do look forward to being allowed to go over/under a second or ten. Trying to cut precisely one minute is a pain.)

(Small aside: I love your icon!)

  • I really have only done a small amount of vidding, mostly back in 2015 or so, but I definitely remember how long a full song feels to vid. One has to worry about things like pacing so much more, too.
  • Short things are great! It's a bit like drabbles.
  • Cropping a song/piece to a minute or so is definitely another fun part of the creation, and even with these few exercises so far it's been lots of fun to figure out what section to frame.

I'm not sure if a one minute vid is comparable/similar to a 100 word drabble, but pretending that's the case, doing an exactly 1 minute vid might be like aiming for those exact 100 words, while going for around a minute would be more like a ficlet; both fun! I always love when someone shares about finding creative inspiration in a new format, and I hope that one-minute-ish vids are a fun format for you to continue to explore. (I'm definitely hooked!)

(It's so pretty, isn't it! It's from Unsplash, my usual dealer of moody ocean photos. I have... a lot.)

exactly 1-minute-long vid being a video version of a drabble feels very apt. Although it perhaps isn't as super-short as a drabble is compared to regular fic. I'd say it's more like a 1000-word fic. Maybe a video drabble would be a 10-second vid, then?

I love editing music for vids, but it's the hardest, most frustrating part when I need it to match the exact length. The phrasing is always off, a fade-out sounds awkward, a sharp cut is too abrupt... just, argh.

I kinda want to try a 10-second "video drabble" now, that sounds intriguing.

I think last year there was a vidding haiku option for vex 1? (The summer school, it seems!) On the one hand, it's named after poetry, but it might also fit the drabble concept.

This is why this year I've just been going for 1 minute + as many seconds I need to make the ending transition work. Much more satisfying, vid-wise.
