[personal profile] nu_breed posting in [community profile] vexercises
Hi all!!! Here we go, the first vexercise of summer 2022! Welcome to Vexercisers old & new!

For this first vexercise, we decided to keep it simple and stay with the original version of the vexercise. We've found that this vidding pechakucha variation remains a terrific exercise for people new to vidding to learn the ropes of editing, and for more experienced editors to try out new media sources, new ideas, or to embrace the limitations and to see what you can do within them.

So many amazing and inspiring videos have come out of Pechakuchas. We have a playlist of them here that [personal profile] bonibaru put together, plus others that were not posted to YouTube at the
Vexercise collection on A03

Here are the instructions/guidelines for this first vexercise:

**1) Pechakucha 2 ways**

Create a video edit of exactly 60 seconds consisting of precisely 10 video clips from your chosen source text, each lasting precisely 6 seconds, assembled with straight cuts. Make two versions of your pechakucha, with 1 minute excerpts from two different songs as audio. Fade in and out on your audio at the beginning and end of the audio clip.

[Word to the wise: Most six second clips that you use are bound to have in-clip cuts--you don't have to go looking only for clips that have no internal cuts. But you can make those internal cuts work for you rhythmically or thematically etc!]

This exercise is inspired directly by the first of the videographic criticism exercises, but modified here to be vid/fanedit focused with the inclusion of music from an outside source. You can see some examples of the original videographic pechakucha’s here and a more vidlike one Lola made here!

Stay tuned for a post about the bonus VfXercise (special effects oriented challenge) for this round and a breakdown of each vexercise and the "due" dates should you wish to get a head start!

If you have any questions about this vexercise, either before you start or as you get going, feel free to post them here!

This vexercise will be "due" in two weeks, so June 11.

Also, please feel free to post your work to the Vexercise AO3 collection!

I really like how the motion works in the second one!

oh wow I'm kind of stunned by how different these two are. The first one you can feel the palpable rising tension and building emotion; the second one feels more like intriguing meta commentary, and little visual moments jump out that I didn't notice in the first one. I love the first one as it is, and yet the second one feels to me like it's asking to be a full vid--that I'd love to see!

These were both so interesting! I don't know anything about the Consular storyline, but the first one especially had me invested in caring about these characters and wanting to know more!

Ahhh these were lovely! Especially the first one gave me such a serotonin rush. This show looks so aesthetic; clearly it's gonna be crack for me.

Haha for once I'm not responding to my own post! :D

My source is the Oneus Do It series, combined with the Oneus I Will Debut reality web show where we followed them (and Onewe) pre-debut, plus some Oneus Diary (which chronicles their more recent tours).

These ones put up a fight; I think I'm not used to working with behind the scenes footage like this, and it made it especially hard with the six second rule to make it feel like there was enough movement. Maybe there are less internal cuts in behind the scenes footage? I ended up using effects to give it more of a sense of dynamism. In the end I had a lot of fun with this! (Also watching oodles of Oneus Do It was just what the doctor ordered.)

I really like both of these!! Sticking to the 6 seconds seems even tougher with animation than live action since there's often less internal movement to work with, but you kept it so visually interesting!

This was a lot of fun! I used Ultimate Note (specifically my side ship, heihua) and I cheated a little but just on one cut in the middle :)

Both vids are here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/39413298

Thank you!! I haven't vidded with live action before but that makes a lot of sense, I'm often jealous of the visual interest you can get with it.

These are so good!! The first one has such a strong beat so the timing is really satisfying, and I really like the mood of the second one.

I also like that we both used Kesha :D

Wow these are so cool. The rhythm is fantastic and both pieces of music are so different to what I assume the original videos were set to.

These are great! I love the humour in the first one and the way you've used motion with the music in the second one.

These are awesome! It's very cool how both songs have the same name as well, that seems like an extra level of difficult/impressive for this exercise. I love the reversed footage and how both songs work with the visuals playing with the concept of time and the past.

I love the first one for how moody it is/the whole descent into darkness vibe, and the second one gave me a very "this is Palpatine POV" feeling.

I haven't seen Ultimate Note, but these were both fun ship vids. It's interesting how the second one feels more intimate and lingering because of the slower song (I think it's my favorite of the two) but the first one feels more like a good recruiter vid of 'hey look at this great ship!'.
