Hi Vexercise folks! So sorry that this check-in is a bit late. But! genre transformation vids are starting to come in :-) How are you finding this vexercise? It asks for a different kind of rethinking and repurposing of your source. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the process! Did you choose to use a second source to help your transformation, or to just transform via editing, coloring, etc., and why? And of course any questions you might have. Happy vidding!

I'd anticipated needing to pull in source from a science fiction mad science show like The X-Files, but Grey's Anatomy's canon is vast. By breaking the 2-3 episode rule and being more expansive I was able to find everything I needed within Grey's canon, helped by a Halloween episode full of faked gore, mad scientist costumes, and possible zombies.

I would have been completely lost on this one if I hadn't had fabulous help from someone who is much more of a visual thinker. [personal profile] yue_ix was actually able to not only identify individual anime opening tropes for me, but also matched a good thirty (!) of them to potential scenes in Guardian. All I did was pick a song and stitch something together based on her storyboard. (And I'm so sad I couldn't use more of the suggestions - I don't think I even covered a third of them in the minute allotted.)

But it was interesting to see how extremely limited my own ability to see things like tropes is. Good to be aware of because tropes are excellent tools!

I've had a specific genre in mind for this exercise from the start, but life has been very distracting in extremely unpleasant ways lately. I've nudged myself to ignore the news and get back on track. For me the use of a very iconic piece of music with just the right clips from Tampopo should, hopefully, work.

I also wanted to say that I started on the full length Grey's Anatomy vid I set out wanting to make and I banged out a decent first draft in four days. There's no way I could have done that so quickly and effectively before I started doing Vexercises- this has been a fantastic way of getting familiar with the source and its visual vocabulary.
