I decided I'd really focus on learning Blender + text animation, so I'm just using screenshots as the "vid" and animating text. It doesn't quite work as I thought it would if there's multiple locations keyframed (instead of going from A to B at a steady clip, then zooming off to C at a faster speed, the journey from A to B seems to be ...velocity-smoothed, I think, so the text almost stops in the middle) and because Blender is primarily for 3D modeling, not video editing, good luck finding a page that explains WTF is going on and how to turn it off. Static images mean static masks, which are easier to work with, though!
I'm using lyrics, but translated – I decided to pick a song in Finnish and then have the (selfmade) translation be the animated text. And! The words/sub-phrases pop up in the order the Finnish says them, not the order they come in in English!
