Vexercise 2 Check-in

Hello all! Happy Saturday/Sunday depending on where you are! How are your Vexercise 2s going?

If you've started already (or finished), are there things you're finding challenging? Satisfying? Both at once?

If you're stuck and not quite sure how to start, maybe share your thinking, your idea, your approach, and we can all help brainstorm!

I haven't make a ton of progress yet - I feel like I'm overthinking this one (and being distracted by a couple of vid bunnies probably isn't helping)

I'm having some trouble with framing the exercise; I think I'm maybe just not as familiar with the source material as I used to be/haven't focused on this type of editing before.

But I'm probably just overthinking it!

Like everyone else I think I'm overthinking it... I'm almost done though, I just had to accept that my video isn't going to have a coherent storyline. I'm a hugely narrative-focused vidder so that was pretty painful :D

I'm just about there. Not happy with the flow of the clips, so I may need to rearrange them a bit

After a couple of false starts I think I'm (kind of) getting the hang of this one, but my source material doesn't seem to have all that many matching shots- it's mostly fight scenes and very static close-ups during conversations. I'm doing some playing around with mirroring footage and changing speeds, but the flow isn't always quite there.

I feel like this is going to be a recurring theme with these, but I'm finding it much harder than last time, when I was brand-new to everything and had no idea what I was doing, so I just... did stuff. Last time I knew immediately what I wanted to start with, and just worked linearly from there, finding matches -- the first and only time I've worked linearly from beginning to end. This time, I don't quite know where to start...

I think this is a common theme from what I see in the comments. All I would suggest is picking a theme and using that to guide your edits (I used fighting but equally a visual theme like water, trees, circles etc could work)

Oh yes I can understand that! Thw vexercises can be great for pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones!

That's totally okay! If you can at least get it with some of your shots I think you've done well, I mostly used fighting in mine too :)

So what I would suggest is having a think about the common visual themes in your source and maybe going from there? It just needs to guide you enough to construct some sort of flow - maybe just pick out those themes and play with them, don't approach it like it has to be a coherent narrative etc.

Thank you! That’s kind of what I’ve ended up doing, fingers crossed. I think I need a better way to organize/create clips but that’s a separate and larger issue 😭

I was wondering if people have tips for finding visual matches in your source. I'm pretty good at remembering things that happen, but remembering something like a circle, a flame, a door closing, something in someone's hand, or which way the camera was moving -- those things just pass by so quickly. I guess if you're working with a limited amount of source it's not so bad, but the Untamed is 50 episodes. Yet people get the most amazing details into their vids.

I actually put this into my clipping process where I tag keywords like fire, door, hit, kick etc and then make smart bins based on the keywords :)
