lola: wow she's going super crazy (wkx obsessing lovingly)
[personal profile] lola posting in [community profile] vexercises
Hi folks! It's time to kick off Vexercise 3! The two versions of the vexercise this time are fairly different, although you certainly could combine the two and do rhythmic editing with audio play. (The Hannibal Glitter & Gold linked below is a great example of that).

Questions? Additional examples & inspiration? Drop a comment below, and of course when you have a vexercise to share, share them here. Happy vidding!

2.0 Vex 3 Option:
Rhythmic Editing

Produce a 1 minute video edit where you focus especially on rhythmic editing. Try your hand at time remapping at least once in this video. Choose an audio track that has a clear rhythmic pattern or interesting rhythmic progressions to make your editing experience easier. Reference the wave visualization of your audio track to help guide your editing choices. (If you’re up to it, make 2 versions, 1 that cuts primarily on the beat, another where you try syncopated editing (cutting on the *and*)

OG Vex 3 Option: Audio layering supercut

Produce a 1 minute video edit of your selected source, in which you edit together similar visuals (this could be a theme like “hands” or “curtains,” or it could be a type of shot or camera work like “all the close ups”). Your audio for this should be a selection of spoken word from your source, or audio that is not music from your source. You can combine these spoken word or non-music sounds with music if you want! The audio and visuals can line up some of the time or none of the time. If your source doesn’t have audio, you can choose audio from another source.

I may have peeked at this exercise before it was released and tried something with a new source! Not sure how rhythmic the editing is, but it was really fun to make!

I, too, peeked ahead. I've made two for this exercise:

"Gnome Rave" (Gravity Falls), rhythmic editing, with a little bit of on-the-beat and a little bit of syncopated; content has creepy-crawlies, flashes, and fast cuts. On AO3.

"Suspension" (After the Matinee), audio layer supercut, content has a clip of an injured and bloody hand and discussion of suicide. On AO3.

I had so much trouble deciding how I was going to approach this and spent a whole weekend listening to music, editing music, discarding it, starting over, replacing tracks. I was a mess, but I think I pulled it together. Eesh.

I don't know whether this video might count as I did it last month, but I'm going to be swamped with work the next couple weeks and may not be able to make another one before deadline. DX

I made another one! This is because of my inability to choose what to do, and attempting to have a plan B. I'd had the rough clipping done when I stopped and focused on "Gnome Rave" so I finished it up this week.

"What We Lost" (Gravity Falls) on AO3. Contains stuttery cuts and flashes.

It's a longer edit than one minute, because I wanted room to play with time remapping and I think my efforts are more obvious this time -- she says, hopefully. This one is more on-the-beat editing.

So I don't know how successful I was with differentiating between cutting on the beat and cutting on the syncopation. This is a really rhythmically complex song with electronic beats and percussion and heavy synths but I think I want to work on a full vid for it because I really really love it.

The Untamed: Technicolour on AO3

Also I have really broken the rules around source, mostly because once I started I realised this was probably a vid I wanted to make so I pilfered source from earlier and later episodes than the four I originally chose.

And it is also slightly longer than 1 minute so yeah this was a big week for breaking rules!

(Going to have a bash at the audio supercut next).

Fandom: Sanctuary. I went for the audio layering challenge, my first time playing around with audio like this actually and I'm pretty happy with this for a first stab at it. I'm definitely a lot more familiar with the Fairlight part of Davinci Resolve now than I used to be, at any rate. Contains violence (including guns, hand-to-hand, and against animals), military/uniformed authorities with weapons, brief blood, some brief clips with flickering lights.

Summary: Helen’s long view; or fear, power, and the inevitable conflict.

Rhythmic editing (syncopated) exercise and maybe a cheat because the source audio was pretty syncopated to start with. My original cut of this was too much. I was cutting too quickly, trying to hit crazy beats and the result was a hot mess. I took a few days off, watched some vids on Russian montage, got my mojo back, and tried again. There are still some remnants of too-busy edits, but there are also a few sequences that really surprised me and made me very happy.

So I did the audio layering, but I'm not sure I did it correctly. I tried to incorporate spoken dialogue from other eps (totally not following the four episode source rule) as well as some spoken word from another source, and music. I also couldn't quite get it to one minute exactly as I couldn't find another spot to cut.

There's background music on one of the spoken word sections (Jim offering Blair noodles) that clashes with the underlying violin and piano piece, but I don't know how to lower that without losing the spoken word part. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I'm using DaVinci Resolve 17.

Oh my god this is such a sloppy last-minute phone-in that I'm actually a little bit embarrassed, but I didn't get inspired until right before the due date and I decided done was better than good.
