Vexercise 2 Drops! Visual Continuity &/or Lightbuilding

Hi everyone!! We are on to Vexercise 2! So for this round, there are two options:

Vex 2: The OG Version:

Visual Continuity: Produce a 1 minute video edit on your selected source using match-on-action and graphic matches as your primary editing logics. The motion of each shot should seem to continue into motion in the following shot. Audio should be music of your own choosing.

Here's a really helpful video on different types of match cuts (bonus with lots of helpful Sherlock examples!) This video is about match cuts in cinema and TV, but I think it's really cool how we can adapt these techniques to vidding/fan video editing.

Vex 2: Follow the light. (aka Lightbuilding)

Lim talks about this in Demystifying Vidding. Produce a 1 minute vid where your guiding logic is lightbuilding. Try letting the flow and build of light guide your editing choices throughout. (You can still incorporate match-on-action as well, so this sort of builds on the OG version)

... Yes I maybe got drunk and threw most of this together, like, a week ago. sssh. This one DEFINITELY has spoilers through WandaVision episode 8; I was actually planning to move through to the finale! but episode 8 gave me, uh, a lot to work with, there.

This was fun. It may or may not end up being a test sketch for my final vid, but it was so much fun.

So I am already deviating from my original source material, but when I saw this challenge I knew the exact audio/video match I had in mind, so I went over to Revolutionary Girl Utena

It was hard pushing myself outside of the lyrical match mindset but I think I found a lot of fun parallels/mirroring going on and so mostly focused on graphic matches (though a bit of lightbuilding def also wormed its way in)

Clarification about the time constraint

Just wondering about this before I start cutting up the clips and music, but uh, is there a consensus on the one minute limit of the exercise? As in, is it considered part of the challenge to make the thing one minute exactly, or could I choose a 90 second song for this and it be considered fine (maybe encouraged)?

Hi hi!! So all the guidelines are totally just guidelines. For some people the one minute limit is really helpful and they’ll try strictly to stick to it always, other people will make some that are a bit longer if the song demands it... some will make a minute version and then a longer version. It’s really totally up to you, and what works for you.
We do officially say that all the vexercises until the last free one are meant to be a minute, but we also say rules are made to be broken :) so go with your muse!

Here to echo what Lola said about doing what works best for you. The one minute limit is part of the challenge for sure, but if you are more experienced and find that limit so constricting that it hampers your creativity, if extending to 90 seconds inspires you to create within the other constricts of the challenge, I say give it a shot - the point is to get you creating and stretching and thinking and learning. What if you worked on a 60 second version and then a 90 second "director's cut"? That could be a really interesting compare/contrast exercise. If you HAD to trim 30 a third of your 90 seconds out - what would stay? What could go? Is it possible to make the same impact or does it completely change everything? If you were a professional and tasked to do a 60 second youtube spot for a client - or had to fit just 60 seconds in for a fanvid show at a con but you had 90 seconds of material, what would drive your choices?

And if all that thinking takes the fun out of it then just do the 90 seconds one and see what happens :D

Thank you! (although ack, spoilers.) A truly incredible amount of this is all just from the one episode. It's kind of amazing. I had planned to cover a lot more plot-ground, but there just KEPT being visual parallels to work with!

Thank you! I absolutely feel like I cheated with this one, because like 90% of the footage is from one episode; they just KEPT giving me amazing visual matches, though, and the lightbuilding challenge was such a perfect one for this show overall, holy wow indeed.

Thank you, RGU definitely plays around with setting up certain patterns and parallels, not to mention handholding is such a common motif of their relationship (seriously I didn't even manage to include all the examples) It is definitely a fun source to play around with graphics matching

Graphics matching on the basis of color and light value, attempting to go from dark to light: "Who Are You" (Gravity Falls), on AO3. Might be triggering because of fast cuts.

Speaking of continuity, heh...I did mine based on Xiao Zhan, so it's multifandom. One minute version for this exercise comes first in the video but I edited and attached the whole song (a measly 31 seconds more!) in the same vid, just to avoid multiple uploads.

This is an ode to Helen/Will under pressure. One my favourite things about this ship is the contradiction between their intensely deep mutual respect and chill vs. when adrenaline and creature possession and etc. bubbles up all sorts of feelings and actions that are sometimes cathartic and sometimes just a whole lot of stuff they wish they could take back. Somehow they still always come out the other side together though (yet rarely before Will gets turned into the resident damsel.) Contains violence (mostly against Will) and flashing lights.
