Hi all!!! Here we go, the first vexercise of summer 2022! Welcome to Vexercisers old & new!

For this first vexercise, we decided to keep it simple and stay with the original version of the vexercise. We've found that this vidding pechakucha variation remains a terrific exercise for people new to vidding to learn the ropes of editing, and for more experienced editors to try out new media sources, new ideas, or to embrace the limitations and to see what you can do within them.

So many amazing and inspiring videos have come out of Pechakuchas. We have a playlist of them here that bonibaru put together, plus others that were not posted to YouTube at the

Here are the instructions/guidelines for this first vexercise:

**1) Pechakucha 2 ways**

Create a video edit of exactly 60 seconds consisting of precisely 10 video clips from your chosen source text, each lasting precisely 6 seconds, assembled with straight cuts. Make two versions of your pechakucha, with 1 minute excerpts from two different songs as audio. Fade in and out on your audio at the beginning and end of the audio clip.

[Word to the wise: Most six second clips that you use are bound to have in-clip cuts--you don't have to go looking only for clips that have no internal cuts. But you can make those internal cuts work for you rhythmically or thematically etc!]

This exercise is inspired directly by the first of the videographic criticism exercises, but modified here to be vid/fanedit focused with the inclusion of music from an outside source. You can see some examples of the original videographic pechakucha’s here and a more vidlike one Lola made here!

"from your chosen source text" - does this mean the same episode of something, or the same show? The same film, or same series of films? If I'm using a music video, does it mean only the music video, or the mv and its trailers, or that "era" of a group?

The official rule is "Choose your primary source. It can be anything! From a TV series to a web series to music videos or vlogs to behind the scene footage to a movie. But it should be between One and a half and 2 hours long, so two episodes of a TV series or a single film, etc. In general, we recommend that you use only this source for all the exercises, but if a particular activity sparks a creative idea and you want to expand or swap your source, of course you can!"

That said, you can choose to break any Vexercise rule you want.

Oh I love both of these! The first one is so moody and cool and really ethereal and the second one (which is my fave) has SUCH great movement in it. I am always in awe of people who can make AMVs and these are great!

Oh wow I loved these soo much!! You created such *moods* with both, with the image visual combos; I love how you're bringing together footage from different groups to create such a full sense of aesthetic and theme. (this is also a concept close to my heart as I recently made a Oneus lore vampire vid :D And also I love Enhypen, so yes, you had me from the get go!)

The first one was really nice to watch, the music created such an atmosphere. The second one was great, too; the song had a stronger beat and it made the synchronization moments so satisfying.

This year I've decided to use the various SWTOR screen recordings I've made over the past few months as my source! For the first set I used the first chapter of the Jedi Consular storyline:

I was feeling very crappy yesterday so I made more Pechakuchas - this time for Coffee Friends which is the reality show one of my blorbos from My Country: The New Age is in (which I highly recommend if you love feel-good reality shows that are actualfax coffee shop AUs)

The process of making these was way more fun than I expected; I think it's due to the specificity of the rules, it really takes a lot of the paralyzing choices away and just makes you make something. It doesn't have to be perfect!

I really like both of these!! Sticking to the 6 seconds seems even tougher with animation than live action since there's often less internal movement to work with, but you kept it so visually interesting!

Ahhh I enjoyed this one! I may have cheated the timing a tiny bit...and I also screwed around with timing a...lot. Maybe too much. I had fun though.

Oh these are great! The second one HURTSSSSS because of the juxtaposition so I think that might be my fave - I love the effects you used here too! The rewind'y feeling works so beautifully.

My source is the Oneus Do It series, combined with the Oneus I Will Debut reality web show where we followed them (and Onewe) pre-debut, plus some Oneus Diary (which chronicles their more recent tours).

These ones put up a fight; I think I'm not used to working with behind the scenes footage like this, and it made it especially hard with the six second rule to make it feel like there was enough movement. Maybe there are less internal cuts in behind the scenes footage? I ended up using effects to give it more of a sense of dynamism. In the end I had a lot of fun with this! (Also watching oodles of Oneus Do It was just what the doctor ordered.)

My source is Heaven Official's Blessing. I did not know that we were supposed to have a time limit on the source, but the amount of screentime that these guys had together was pretty limited anyway.

I love the suspense of that long shot in the middle where one of them grabs their sword, especially in the first video where the song has been building up to that moment. Great pacing! And the timing really works out well for both songs.

I made it! Hurts like hell, two Star Wars: The Phantom Menace vidlets focused on Shmi Skywalker.

This was difficult in different ways than I expected! I thought I wouldn't have enough material and that I would struggle with the editing process (I haven't edited video in years, and this is my first time using DaVinci Resolve), but instead I fought the most with the audio. It's hard to get exactly 1 minute of a song that doesn't end awkwardly. I really wish I could have trimmed some time off the clips, or added a title screen to have the sound fade over, or something.

These are wonderful - the first music choice does HURT and I think it's my favourite of the two but the second one works so well with the desolation and the sand and dust so I think they're both great choices!

One more in, just before the deadline! I decided to use the pechakucha structure as an opportunity to learn the tool twixtor, which is a Premiere and AE add in (expensive but there are ways, DM me if you'd like to know ;) that allows you to have really smooth slo mo. I found it tricky to totally control the timing within the longer clips demanded by the pechakucha, but it was still fun and it seems like a really cool tool.

I got really excited about the idea of doing this exercise for the untamed yi city arc and then later in the week decided to do a second set for a canon I thought I might actually do for other vexercises (which was also way faster because it's actually a 2 hour movie instead of like 8 episodes of tv). This was so much fun!
