Week 4 Vexercise Drops!! Side Character Study

So for this week we're taking a break from all the various formal constraints (beside the one minute limit... which uh... can be a wonderful guideline if it's helpful to you, taking the pressure off to make something bigger, but if you're inspired you can certainly keep going ike I totally did in my last vexercise

One of the things vids can do so wonderfully is bring to the fore and distill side characters, and that's what this vexercise is all about:

4) Side character study


Produce a 1 minute video edit from your selected source focusing on a side character, making them the central character of your vid. Audio can be of your choosing.

*turns up early with tea* I continued with my Guardian vidding, and, uh, I abandoned all pretenses of rule-abiding to make a full-length vid! Shadows Crawling (on AO3). The song didn't cut nicely into 1 minute, so I made a 1:05 edit, then decided I might as well expand it into a full-length vid. For those not in the canon, warnings for hanging and suicidal ideation. Maybe also a flickering image warning? (Could someone tell me what the threshold is for flickering images? /inexperienced)

Oh a Li Qian vid, wow! When you single out her story like that, you really see how she could be the lead of her own version of this series. I love the way you deployed cyclical editing to convey how trapped she feels! Really compelling!!

This one was a lot of fun for me to make and I'd been wanting to do something for this character for quite some time, too.

"Oh! My! God!", a study of a character who definitely does not have it all together, (no warnings except for quick cuts, on AO3).

I'm going to make another one because surely this doesn't count, but... I made a supercut of Derek Shepherd's coffee cup from that one episode in Season 10 where his coffee cup goes on a journey. This might be the dumbest vid I've ever made, and I've made some dumb vids.

I love that this elevates the coffee mug to a being a character in its own right. So very clever.

I want to be clear that this is not my own cleverness. I did not arrange the clips artfully into a narrative. I just literally grabbed every single clip in the episode where the cup appears and arranged them in order and set it to music that I stole from laurashapiro's West Wing vid "Circles".

I'd just like to say that even if it's not new cleverness to you, it's still a very cool transformative work and since I'm not familiar with the source, it's all very new to me. In working on exercise three, I didn't feel satisfied with how I tried to adhere to the rules there; something got broken no matter how I approached it, and for my second try, I also did what you did here: grabbed each clip and arranged them in order, with very little adjustment. You made the already set narrative something new, regardless. I definitely enjoyed every second of it.

Haha this is such a clever take on this vexercise!! And I love how it's a sort of response to or remix of Circles! I really enjoyed this! It is amazing how it renders the cup a character and even gives it some character depth lol. The red cup's hero journey :)

Honestly, this is genius. The adventure! The drama of the shattered cup! The reunion with its brethren! What a good cut of an intrepid coffee cup, and I love the way the title riffs off "supercut". :D

Shibasaki Ko is absolutely ferocious in Battle Royale and this vid does a wonderful job of distilling that ferocity down, with a great song to boot.

I used two side characters from the anime Sarazanmai, Reo and Mabu. They're canonically a couple, and have a lot going on in the few minutes of screentime they get! If anyone has seen Utena, Sarazanmai is by its director Kunihiko Ikuhara, which is why some of the visual language (and by that I mean yanking things out of your beloved's chest) seems familiar.
