Vexercise 1 drops!

Hi all!!! Here we go, the first vexercise of summer 2022! Welcome to Vexercisers old & new!

For this first vexercise, we decided to keep it simple and stay with the original version of the vexercise. We've found that this vidding pechakucha variation remains a terrific exercise for people new to vidding to learn the ropes of editing, and for more experienced editors to try out new media sources, new ideas, or to embrace the limitations and to see what you can do within them.

So many amazing and inspiring videos have come out of Pechakuchas. We have a playlist of them here that [personal profile] bonibaru put together, plus others that were not posted to YouTube at the
Vexercise collection on A03

Here are the instructions/guidelines for this first vexercise:

**1) Pechakucha 2 ways**

Create a video edit of exactly 60 seconds consisting of precisely 10 video clips from your chosen source text, each lasting precisely 6 seconds, assembled with straight cuts. Make two versions of your pechakucha, with 1 minute excerpts from two different songs as audio. Fade in and out on your audio at the beginning and end of the audio clip.

[Word to the wise: Most six second clips that you use are bound to have in-clip cuts--you don't have to go looking only for clips that have no internal cuts. But you can make those internal cuts work for you rhythmically or thematically etc!]

This exercise is inspired directly by the first of the videographic criticism exercises, but modified here to be vid/fanedit focused with the inclusion of music from an outside source. You can see some examples of the original videographic pechakucha’s here and a more vidlike one Lola made here!

Stay tuned for a post about the bonus VfXercise (special effects oriented challenge) for this round and a breakdown of each vexercise and the "due" dates should you wish to get a head start!

If you have any questions about this vexercise, either before you start or as you get going, feel free to post them here!

This vexercise will be "due" in two weeks, so June 11.

Also, please feel free to post your work to the Vexercise AO3 collection!

Thank you! I love kpop (and jpop and cpop &c) mvs and the richness of the imagery they provide to work with, so it was so exciting to work on this challenge. Thank you for mentioning your vid! Have commented on your post, and I really appreciate you sending me there!

Thank you! I got really stuck trying to find a second music choice and ended up trying for something completely different, so I'm glad that it worked!

Thank you! I really lucked out with the rhythm as you're absolutely right: the original mvs are definitely more pop.

I love the energy in these; the strong beat especially in the first is so much fun. The lyrics are such an interesting commentary and influence the mood in a cool way!

These pack such emotion; it's really cool how both songs have the same name/theme and yet feel so different. The juxtaposition of the opening and the line "how does it feel to be broken at seventeen" - ouch.

One more in, just before the deadline! I decided to use the pechakucha structure as an opportunity to learn the tool twixtor, which is a Premiere and AE add in (expensive but there are ways, DM me if you'd like to know ;) that allows you to have really smooth slo mo. I found it tricky to totally control the timing within the longer clips demanded by the pechakucha, but it was still fun and it seems like a really cool tool.

Oh, working with music videos is a fantastic idea. You get so much beautiful imagery to play with! I love all the biting. The two videos feel really different also, but they're both... anxious? Something like that. I especially like the first song, that video feels like you're just wading into a pool of experience. I don't know if that makes any sense :D

Thank you! The series does such a good job with (what I assume is) a fairly shoestring budget!

I didn't have a firm idea of how I wanted these to turn out so I found this challenging, but it was fun! My main goal was just to learn the basics of using Davinci Resolve and I did manage that.

These are for Seventeen (the performance unit):

Thank you! I had this realization that while I was editing the first one to a love song, I just kept showing scenes of the characters killing each other over and over again. So for the second I basically made the subtext, text

I got really excited about the idea of doing this exercise for the untamed yi city arc and then later in the week decided to do a second set for a canon I thought I might actually do for other vexercises (which was also way faster because it's actually a 2 hour movie instead of like 8 episodes of tv). This was so much fun!

Time raiders ones

I heard there was a time warp or this was extended to today or something like that, so I decided to sneak in my first vexercise....

Getting 3 Red Sonja vidlets in after the deadline. I'm using Vidukon as my late excuse.

I may have made things needlessly difficult for myself by choosing to do a motion comic.

Thanks! I ended up loving the Fleurie song for the vid, but I knew I had to use Agnes Obel for one of the vids before I even started. Her music has this sparse, rough feeling that fits Tatooine (and Shmi) perfectly.

This is a very late comment, but all three of these were great, so good they intrigued me into beginning to watch the show :D
