Vexercise 1 drops!

Hi all!!! Here we go, the first vexercise of summer 2022! Welcome to Vexercisers old & new!

For this first vexercise, we decided to keep it simple and stay with the original version of the vexercise. We've found that this vidding pechakucha variation remains a terrific exercise for people new to vidding to learn the ropes of editing, and for more experienced editors to try out new media sources, new ideas, or to embrace the limitations and to see what you can do within them.

So many amazing and inspiring videos have come out of Pechakuchas. We have a playlist of them here that [personal profile] bonibaru put together, plus others that were not posted to YouTube at the
Vexercise collection on A03

Here are the instructions/guidelines for this first vexercise:

**1) Pechakucha 2 ways**

Create a video edit of exactly 60 seconds consisting of precisely 10 video clips from your chosen source text, each lasting precisely 6 seconds, assembled with straight cuts. Make two versions of your pechakucha, with 1 minute excerpts from two different songs as audio. Fade in and out on your audio at the beginning and end of the audio clip.

[Word to the wise: Most six second clips that you use are bound to have in-clip cuts--you don't have to go looking only for clips that have no internal cuts. But you can make those internal cuts work for you rhythmically or thematically etc!]

This exercise is inspired directly by the first of the videographic criticism exercises, but modified here to be vid/fanedit focused with the inclusion of music from an outside source. You can see some examples of the original videographic pechakucha’s here and a more vidlike one Lola made here!

Stay tuned for a post about the bonus VfXercise (special effects oriented challenge) for this round and a breakdown of each vexercise and the "due" dates should you wish to get a head start!

If you have any questions about this vexercise, either before you start or as you get going, feel free to post them here!

This vexercise will be "due" in two weeks, so June 11.

Also, please feel free to post your work to the Vexercise AO3 collection!

Oh yes, it totally does have that type of vibe -- I wanted to create a feeling of nostalgia and like you're part of the friend group. TBH i feel like that's the experience of being a tomoon (the fan-name for Oneus) and so I am glad to convey that! It's a different type of vid though, from the sort I usually make for sure!

Thank you! I'm very glad both songs worked for you.

Thank you! Yeah, the first one is imo really effective.

Ahh it's wild how different these two are; the first one has such intense build and great audiovisual matching; the second one is like an aesthetic experience, turning the horror into something more like an out of body experience, if that makes any sense. They were both terrific! And yes, the pechakucha framework can be so freeing -- it's great if you're feeling vidder's block, I've found!

Really interesting music choices

I love both of those! I’ve seen a lot of OFMD vids lately, but these clip & music choices feel fresh

Yeah, it was fun to play around with that!

I like these a lot, especially the second

Thank you! That's exactly what I was going for so I'm happy it came through. (Well, I can only really take the credit for the first one... I dropped the second song on there just to test it out and it just worked on its own without any tweaking.)

Oooooh these are both really nice. The feeling of the first one is so delightfully unsettling.

These both work really well.

I don't know anything about Miss Sherlock but I like these so much. Putting a string cover over the instrument shots is so clever! And in the second one the timing struck me for the part where the coat gets thrown at the one woman, and her eyes go down and then up and it switches to the next shot.... it's just really nice!

Don’t know this source at all but I love how the same clips can tell either a story of conflict or one of longing with the change of music

These are really good! In the first one, the lyrics combined with behind the scenes footage really makes you get the feeling that like... one of them made this video and is looking back at it or something? It gives a really nostalgic and wistful feeling.

Then the second one is cute and fun, and it caught me so off guard with the perfect movement on "life is beautiful".

I like these. In fact they reminded me that I wanted to check out this series, I love reading/watching variations on the Sherlock Holmes theme

These are both wonderful, each in a unique way

I made it! Hurts like hell, two Star Wars: The Phantom Menace vidlets focused on Shmi Skywalker.

This was difficult in different ways than I expected! I thought I wouldn't have enough material and that I would struggle with the editing process (I haven't edited video in years, and this is my first time using DaVinci Resolve), but instead I fought the most with the audio. It's hard to get exactly 1 minute of a song that doesn't end awkwardly. I really wish I could have trimmed some time off the clips, or added a title screen to have the sound fade over, or something.

These are wonderful! I honestly couldn't tell which one was the intentional initial edit; they both worked so well, they're riveting, and it's kind of amazing how the shots took on such different meaning in each because of the audio. (And as someone who is right now in the middle of ep 14, I am *invested* and these hurt just right!)

I love these! Miss Sherlock, yay! I really felt their complicated relationship here, how they dance around each other as they get closer despite themselves, especially somehow in the second one. Loved both music choices!

Woah, I was already planning on watching The King: Eternal Monarch but these just bumped it waaay up on my list. Count me now fascinated with this character! And I love how they both worked as recruiter videos, yet in different ways.

Okay but Bad Blood for those two is genius!?? That version is utterly hilarious. And it's fascinating how the second one with Depeche Mode creates such a different mood--would be interesting to see what a full serious video for them might look like! These were great!

Oh wow, these are gorgeous. I love the way the two music selections feel so different and yet both inspire similar pathos.

Aaaa thank you! I placed half the clips to Empty Threat, then put Rolling in the Deep down and placed the rest of the clips to both, I’m glad it worked. I’m so happy you’re enjoying the show!
