Vexercise 4 Drops: Side Character Vids

Hi all! So for Vexercise 4 we thought that we'd go with the OG exercise for everyone, because side characters need more love, so....

Vex 4 Produce a 1 minute video edit from your selected source focusing on a side character, making them the central character of your vid. Audio can be of your choosing.

Please feel free to share your favorite side character vids in the comments, and we can add them to the post. But just for starters, a couple of inspiration videos:

Yeah throughout this challenge I've found myself thinking a lot more about the overall structure of vids, sometimes I really want to jump immediately to a certain scene/idea I have, but sometimes having the patience to put it elsewhere can really make things pop

And yeah I've had a great time with Season 3, definitely feels like we're building off all the development from before to dig into some real juicy drama

Starsky & Hutch / Huggy Bear character study

This was an easy choice of character + song for me :) I'm enjoying the vidding process more as I (slowly, slowly) learn how the software works. It's fun when I'm not banging my head in frustration, who knew? 🤣

I'm only posting this unlisted & here because I'm going to expand it right away to a full vid--I reached a pausing point but it really doesn't feel like a complete thought to me, so I'm going to complete it :)

... no you just legit did this in three hours the night it was due, and sort of got stuck between two ideas. (Although I still think it's better than my last one.)

This was the vexercise where, as I was browsing through the OG vexercises, I knew immediately who and what I wanted to do.

I chose Veronica Sarris, the Switchman (bomber) from the pilot. I've always been intrigued by her as a character - she's got a great backstory as the daughter of one of Jim's men that died in the helicopter crash in Peru, which really amps Jim's guilt when he deals with her. The confrontation between them on the bus (that the vid starts with) is so good and emotional. Plus I love the actress - Molly Parker.

But in spite of knowing all that, this was the hardest vid I've done so far for these! It was a challenge to get good clips - not so much of her, but of other aspects like the helicopter crash - that I wanted to use to tell her story. I struggled with putting things together the way I wanted them to tell the story I wanted to tell. And I struggled with the music. I've never cut music before but I really wanted specific lyrics under the clips.

The music is Entangled by Genesis. This might be one of the ones I end up expanding after the vexercises are over and I have better skills. I'd love to use the whole song and maybe pull clips from other sources to augment the story.
