Vexercise 1 Drops! (2021 Edition)

Hi all!!! Here we go, the first vexercise of the 2021 edition! We're so excited to play in this sandbox again, and hope you are all as well!

For this first vexercise, we decided to keep it simple and stay with the original version of the vexercise. We've found that this vidding pechakucha variation has been a terrific exercises for people new to vidding to learn the ropes of editing, and for old timers to try out new media sources, new ideas, or to embrace the limitations and to see what you can do within them. So many amazing and inspiring videos came out of these vexercises last year. You can see them on
this YouTube playlist that [personal profile] bonibaru  put together, plus others that were not posted to YouTube at the Vexercise collection on A03

Here are the instructions/guidelines for this first vexercise:

1) Pechakucha 2 ways

Create a video edit of exactly 60 seconds consisting of precisely 10 video clips from your chosen source text, each lasting precisely 6 seconds, assembled with straight cuts. Make two versions of your pechakucha, with 1 minute excerpts from two different songs as audio. Fade in and out on your audio at the beginning and end of the audio clip.

[Word to the wise: Most six second clips that you use are bound to have in-clip cuts--you don't have to go looking only for clips that have no internal cuts. But you can make those internal cuts work for you rhythmically or thematically etc!]

[This exercise is inspired directly by the first of the videographic criticism exercises, but modified here to be vid/fanedit focused with the inclusion of music from an outside source. You can see some examples of the original videographic pechakucha’s
here and a more vidlike one Lola made here. !!And now you can see way more wonderful vidding pikachus on this YouTube Playlist (as well as examples of the other O.G. vexercises at the vexercises collection on a03!

If you have any questions about this vexercise, either before you start or as you get going, feel free to post them here!

Stay tuned for a post about technology, resources, etc., and a check in next saturday. This vexercise will be "due" in two weeks, so March 27

Yay! I'm glad I'm not the only one using an older source! I really enjoyed this - the music pieces were very different and gave each vid a different feel, and I loved the hugging clips!

Those were wonderful! I really liked how the order of clips interspersed Wei Wuxian playing with Lan Zhan and the others investigating. And the music choices were perfect!

I think that worked really well! I totally got the different POVs - Call Me Maybe is so Wei Wuxian. :-)

These were lovely! The difference between the instrumental piece and Bad Romance was very striking. I don't know the source, but it's gorgeous!

Wow, Bury A Friend really punched up the final clips for me, that was wonderfully done! I don't know this source but it looks interesting.

What an interesting source, with all the different styles of animation. I thought the music choices went with it really nicely.

Very interesting! I definitely got the different POVs, and the music choices worked well for me.

Convoy was so perfect! It's like it was made for those clips - well done! And the second one did have a very different feel to it. I enjoyed these!

Oh, that's good to hear! That was definitely the vibe I was going for with the two music choices. Thanks!

Thank you! :D I'm so glad the ordering of clips worked -- I actually struggled a lot with the investigation scenes.

Ha, thank you! I like it too, but I admit it was a total accident; I really was not expecting it to work while dragging it onto the timeline. :)

Thank you! I love WWX's fall into darkness so much and how much he changes offscreen, so I'm really glad the vids captured that!

The boop a doop a doop was my favorite part. :)

I know absolutely nothing about Gravity Falls, but these vids were amazing! The first song had a quirkiness that lightened the creepiness, while the second one made the clips look utterly eerie and unsettling. *claps*

I just finished watching the movie last night, so today I said to myself, "Now I can watch the mini-vids, yay!!!!"

Oh, wow, those were so cool! I'm always intrigued by instrumental vids and I really thought the first one captured the graceful movement and the wonder of the images. The second one was a hoot!!! And yet the movement still worked so well, like the "oh la la" movement, as well as Boya lowering his bow on the word "romance."

Yes yes yes!!! The second one is SOOOOO slashy. (I suspect the first one is a better movie ... but I just ate the second one up!)

I loved every single one of these!!!

There were moments that worked SO well with one song that I didn't think they'd work with another and then, well day-um, you did it! bb!Shen Wei crying out "Kunlun!" on the line "I don't want to miss you" was so perfect, and then the way that same moment worked with the howl in "Mr. Jones" ... WOW. And then that little smile he gets in the very first clip watching Zhao Yunlan sleep is so tender in "Iris" and so rueful-I-can't-believe-I'm doing-this-to-myself in "Toxic."

I love the cover of "Iris" that you used, and I've long believed that "Mr. Jones" was a slashy song in and of itself, and it fit splendidly here. I hadn't heard "Raining" before but I liked it very very much.

Eeeeee!!!!

The first one is so moving and tender and the clips for the necklace and the heart just fit so well ... But I like the second one even better! It just brings so much sass and spice!!! The opening clip with that sexy riff is just *chef's kiss*.

WOW WOW WOW - These were amazing! Such different "feels" with each different song. I especially liked how the slowness of the third song seemed to make the clips look almost like they were in slow-motion, even though they were the same. Also the way you ended the second one on the word "revenge." And the way the opening moments of the first one looked like the fires were flickering in time with the backbeat.

Thank you!! The animation alone makes Kyousougiga a treat to work with, on top of being a very good family drama

This exercise is such a challenge for me each time, but I'm happy to know what does work. Thanks!
